The first week of summer vacation was fantastic, but by the second week, you just want to get back to school. Shake off that thought! There's so much around you to explore, so seize the opportunity and find something fun to do!
Steps
Discover Joy with New Hobbies

Learn a New Hobby. Is there something you’ve always wanted to learn but never thought you could? The free time during summer vacation is the perfect chance to try something new. Here are some ideas:
- Learn to play a musical instrument.
- Learn singing or dancing.
- Try a new art form like photography or knitting.

Play sports. In many places, summer is the perfect time of year for outdoor activities, as long as you can handle the heat. If you don't already have a favorite sport, now is the perfect opportunity to pick one up.
- Gather your friends or join a sports team like soccer, basketball, or volleyball.
- Find an activity for one or two people, such as surfing, table tennis, or tennis.

Make a movie. Invite your friends over and brainstorm ideas for a film. You can create a movie in any genre, from science fiction to a cooking competition show or even a music video. If you choose to go forward with a project, you’ll have weeks of fun preparing the script, costumes, casting participants, and editing the film.
- You can also come up with a series of short videos and start a Youtube channel.

Start a radio show. Find a recording program or tape recorder and create your own radio show. Make a list of what you'll need: music, funny stories, interviews, ads, true or fake news commentary, and more…

Try a craft activity. Craft games and arts may require the time and patience that you don't have during the school year, but they are perfect for the summer break. Here are some suggestions:
- Fold paper hearts. You can cut heart-shaped notes to send to loved ones, or find some origami paper and try folding more creative versions. There are many other origami folding techniques to try.
- Create rainbow crayon art or experiment by melting crayons on hot stones to create unique artwork.
- Make slime or play with clay. Use unusual materials for decorating or simply for fun.
- Create sun balloons. These balloons can travel hundreds of kilometers in a day and are easy to make.

Become an expert gamer in a complex game. When it comes to gaming, you'll never truly finish learning, but summer break gives you the chance to pick a game and work towards becoming a master strategist! Some games like bridge, chess, Magic, or Starcraft II even have international competitions with large prizes for the winners.

Learn to Cook. If you're unfamiliar with cooking or don't know much about food, now is the perfect opportunity to pick up some recipes. There are countless recipes available online or in cookbooks that you can borrow from the library or purchase from a bookstore. You can even start with some easy ideas like these:
- Make a cold smoothie. Try combining unusual or even wild ingredients to create a fun and refreshing drink for the summer, or challenge your friends to taste a mysterious beverage.
- Make a peanut butter pudding cake with chocolate for a delicious dessert.
- Create hummus dip to pair with crispy crackers. If you're feeling adventurous, you could even try baking homemade bread.
Self-improvement

Find a Job During the Summer Break. Summer jobs are a great way to stay busy, meet new people, and even earn some money. Many retail businesses, tourist spots, and summer festivals need extra help during the season.

Volunteer Work. Helping your community is a fulfilling activity that brings happiness and motivation, and of course, it also contributes to a good cause. Look for local organizations involved in activities like trash clean-ups, caring for injured or abandoned animals, or participating in political causes.
- Volunteer work can also enhance your college application, though your interview and essay submissions will stand out even more if you're genuinely passionate about the work.

Immerse Yourself in the Piles of Books at the Library. Books can transport you to another world or allow you to see through the eyes of others. Try diving deep into a specific topic, such as Greek mythology, Japanese history, or space travel.
- If you're eager to learn more, consider enrolling in an online course from a university. Many top universities offer lectures online, and they are often more engaging than the ones in high school classrooms.

Start Writing a Journal. Many people keep journals to recount their daily experiences, navigate tough times, or plan for the following day. A few years from now, you might read those pages again and smile fondly at the memories of this summer holiday.

Write a Novel. This is a large-scale project that could fill up your summer and beyond if you're inspired. If you're unsure where to begin, try writing a story in the style of your favorite author, or collaborate with a friend to exchange ideas.

Learn a New Language. Knowing a foreign language opens up more opportunities and enhances your resume. You could find a beginner’s class nearby or ask friends and family to teach you their language. Explore free online language courses, tools, or chat with native speakers to practice.
Attend Events

Participate in Local Events. Most communities organize fairs, festivals, or other fun activities during the summer. You can search online for events in your area or ask people around you if they know of any upcoming happenings. Be sure to check websites or advertisements for popular venues like concert halls, theaters, and stadiums.

Explore Your City Like a Tourist. Visit local tourism websites or brochures to uncover attractions or events that bring visitors from afar. These could be anything from museums to amusement parks within the city that you haven't discovered yet, or nearby areas worth checking out.

Go Camping. Spend a few days camping with friends or family, or even camp in your own backyard. Gather around a campfire or BBQ grill to share ghost stories and make some s'mores.

Play a Treasure Hunt. Look up treasure hunt locations online and search around to see if anyone has hidden a secret prize. You can either hunt for treasures or hide your own using GPS devices or by finding coordinates on a map.

Create an Indoor Vacation. If you can’t leave home due to bad weather, lack of transport, or no events happening, create your own simulated vacation. Invite some friends over for a sleepover and transform a room into a castle, jungle, hotel, or any setting you like. Purchase some unusual snacks and 'souvenirs' to share with your guests. On rainy days, wear swimsuits, put on sunglasses, and lounge inside as if you were truly on vacation.

Reconnect with Old Friends. If your current friends are busy or not in town, dig up your yearbooks, contact numbers, or emails and reach out to old acquaintances. These activities will be much more enjoyable with friends, or you can simply meet up and reminisce about old memories.

Try assembling something. You can build anything from a cardboard house to simple 3D models. This activity will help improve your logical thinking and patience.
Find fun in the hot weather

Swimming. If you live in a hot climate with summer, swimming is a great way to cool down and have fun. Head to the beach or pool with friends or family. Play swimming games like Marco Polo or 'Shark Attack,' race each other, or invite a group of friends for a water polo game.

Cool down with water activities. Even if you can't find a place to swim, there are other ways to enjoy the water. Wear swimwear or lightweight clothing that you don't mind getting wet, and gather some friends who are up for these activities:
- Turn on the sprinkler and play tag or hide and seek in the cool water jets.
- Have a water fight. Fill up water balloons, grab a cheap water gun from the dollar store, or use a garden hose. You’ll have endless fun… or kick off a full-fledged water battle!

Make cold drinks and desserts. Cold beverages or ice cream are perfect for hot weather, and making them yourself can be a great way to fight boredom.
- Try making ice cream at home. You can use the traditional 'salt and ice' method or follow a recipe to create a rich, creamy, and delicious treat.
- Make fruit popsicles and store them in the freezer for the whole summer.
- Stock up on homemade ginger beer or lemonade in the fridge.
- Make ice pops. Pour cold water into cups with a straw or disposable spoon, freeze for two hours, then enjoy them when they’re still icy and tasty.

Relax in a room. Find a cool room, or use blankets and sheets to create a shaded retreat. Turn on the fan, grab a book to read, and wait out the hottest part of the day.
- Other indoor relaxation activities include sewing, playing card games, watching movies, or listening to music.

Play games at sunset. As the evening cools down, invite a group of friends to play games like hide and seek, tag, or capture the flag in a large yard or park. If it's too hot in the evening for active games, set up an outdoor table to play cards or board games while waiting for the temperature to drop.
- Choose a board game that won’t be blown away by the wind, such as Carcassonne, Tikal, or Blokus. These games are fairly popular and available at many toy stores, but classic board games like chess, checkers, or any magnetic travel games are easier to find.
- The card game Hearts can be played in windy areas if you have stones or other weights to keep the cards in place.
Decorating

Organize or redecorate your home. Some people enjoy this activity, while others are less enthusiastic, but even if you're not into decorating, it’s better than doing nothing. Just sorting through old items can help you rediscover old toys, books, and nostalgic items. For bigger projects, you could repaint a room or hang new posters and pictures.

Pick flowers around the area. See how many wildflowers you can gather from your yard or nearby fields. You can make flower bouquets or press the flowers to preserve them as decorations. Leaves can also be dried for use in art projects or home decor.
- Do not pick flowers in someone else's yard without permission, or flowers that appear to have been intentionally planted.
Enjoy the fun of taking care of your appearance

Make your own beauty products. There are hundreds of DIY recipes using natural ingredients like yogurt, avocados, or other items. You can open your kitchen cupboard and treat yourself to a spa day without spending much at all.

Upgrade your wardrobe. Go through your closet and pick out clothes you no longer like or can’t wear anymore. Invite a few friends over and ask them to bring clothes they don’t need. You can swap clothes with each other or even host a small yard sale to make a little extra spending money.
