The regulations governing citizenship and nationality in the UK are highly complex, owing to the nation's deep-rooted monarchical traditions. Nonetheless, there are two primary methods to attain British citizenship: naturalization after five years of residency in the UK, or marrying a British citizen and living there for three years. Additionally, you must meet several other specific requirements.
Steps
Naturalization as a British Citizen

Reside in the UK. To become a legal citizen, you must live in the UK for five years before applying for naturalization. To reside in the UK, you must obtain certain types of visas.
- Some visas that permit you to live in the UK include work visas, student visas, family or spouse-sponsored visas, and tourist visas.

Complete the UK settlement application. This application will require you to provide your visa and current residency status. If approved, you will gain indefinite leave to remain, meaning there is no specific time limit requiring you to leave the country, unlike with a visa.
- This application must be completed one year before applying for citizenship.

No criminal record. You must have a clean record to qualify for British citizenship, although minor offenses may not be counted against you.

Commit to living in the UK. You must demonstrate your intention to reside in the UK if you wish to apply for citizenship here.
- You must have lived in the UK for a specific period before applying, with no more than 450 days spent outside the country in the last five years and no more than 90 days in the year preceding your application.

Prove English language proficiency. You must demonstrate your ability to use English, which will be discussed in more detail later.

Pass the Life in the UK test. This is an exam on British culture and life, which we will explore further in the following sections.

Submit your application and pay the fee. You are required to pay a fee depending on the type of citizenship application you are submitting.
- There are three ways to apply: 1) Download the form online, fill it out, and submit it; 2) Visit a National Citizenship Service office in your area, where staff will assist you with the application; 3) Contact a private agency or individual who can guide you through the application process.
Becoming a Citizen After Marrying a British National

Reside in the UK. You must live in the UK for three years, during which you cannot spend more than 270 days abroad. In the year leading up to your application, you cannot be outside the UK for more than 90 days. You must hold a valid visa to live in the UK. Typically, for this type of citizenship, you would have a marriage visa, but you may also have lived in the UK under other visas, such as a student or tourist visa.

You must be over 18 years old. You must meet the legal age requirement to apply for citizenship in the UK.

Maintain a clean record. This means you should not have any serious criminal convictions on your record.

Possess decision-making capacity. This requirement is also referred to as civil capacity. The government needs to ensure that your marriage and decision to apply for citizenship are entirely voluntary.

Demonstrate English language proficiency. You must prove your ability to speak English, which includes meeting specific challenges that will be discussed later.

- You may qualify for British citizenship under simpler conditions if you meet the following criteria: having a mother or father born in the UK before January 1, 1983, holding no other nationality, being a British citizen through other means, or having ties to places like Gibraltar or Hong Kong.
