Selecting a career can often be a challenging journey, and excelling in it may require some valuable insights. If you’ve chosen to pursue a role as a librarian and are feeling a bit anxious or uncertain, continue reading for guidance.
Steps
Understand how libraries operate.- Reshelving books (returning recently checked-in books to their proper places)
- Checking books in and out (often using electronic scanners; however, some libraries may still use older methods like stamping)
- Shelf reading (reviewing all books on the shelves to ensure they are correctly organized)
- Managing events and activities (libraries often host programs for all age groups, such as book clubs and craft sessions)
- Overseeing specific sections (like non-fiction or children’s books)
- Locating requested books (modern libraries may have online catalogs allowing patrons to request books from nearby libraries)
- Processing new books (new arrivals require barcoding, classification, and cataloging)
- Assisting patrons in finding books

Read, read, and read some more. Sometimes patrons will ask for recommendations or if you have books on specific topics. It’s beneficial to be familiar with the books in your library so you can assist patrons as effectively as possible.
Understand your patrons. In a small library, you’re likely to see the same people every day. Even in larger libraries, there are regulars you’ll encounter frequently. Knowing the preferences of frequent visitors allows you to suggest new books to them. It’s also important to be aware of those who might cause disruptions or return books late.
- You might have seen or read about the stereotypical librarian—a stern older woman with glasses who hisses “shush!” if you whisper too much. Don’t be that librarian. Be approachable. Smile at people, ask if they’ve found what they’re looking for, and maintain a positive attitude.
Dress appropriately. You don’t need to wear tight, gray button-up shirts; comfort is key for a full day’s work. However, avoid T-shirts and shorts. Dress professionally for the job: for women, long-sleeve sweaters or blouses with skirts, slacks, or jeans are suitable. For men, polo shirts or button-up shirts paired with khakis or trousers are appropriate.
- Make sure you wear comfortable shoes. You might think librarians sit at desks all day, but there’s a lot of walking involved. Avoid high heels for women and brand-new shoes for men.
- Avoid wearing jingling or clanging jewelry. These sounds are easily noticeable in a quiet library.

Learn from your mistakes. Even the best librarians make errors. If you make a mistake, stay calm. Acknowledge the error and/or apologize if the situation calls for it.

Learn from others. If you have a former or current librarian as a friend or colleague, seek their advice. They may have valuable tips and amusing anecdotes to share.

Engage with library staff. Be friendly and kind. As with any workplace, maintaining good relationships with your colleagues is beneficial.
Tips
- Be punctual.
- Being considerate to patrons doesn’t mean overlooking penalties. Be firm when necessary, but always remain respectful.
