This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to block a user on Facebook, preventing them from searching, viewing, or contacting your account. You can perform this action on both the mobile app and the website on your computer. If you accidentally block someone, you can always unblock them later.
Steps
On Mobile
Open Facebook. This is the app with a blue background and a white "f". The News Feed will appear if you are logged in to Facebook on your phone or tablet.
- If you are not logged in to Facebook, enter your email address (or phone number) and password to proceed.
Select the ☰ icon. You can find it at the bottom right corner on iPhones or at the top right corner on Android devices.
Scroll down and tap Settings at the bottom of the screen.
- If you're using an Android OS, you can skip this step.
Tap on Account Settings to open your account settings.
- On Android, you may need to scroll down first.
Select Blocking from the second selection group at the bottom of the screen.
- If you're using a smaller phone, you might need to scroll down first.
Select the name field. It's the text box labeled 'Type a name or email' near the top of the screen.

Click on Settings at the bottom of the options list.
Click on Blocking on the left side of the Settings page.
Click on the name field. This is the input section with the placeholder text "Add name or email" located just below the "Block users" heading.
Enter the username and then click Block. If you have the person's email address, you can enter that instead of their name.
Click on Block next to the name of the person you want to block. Facebook will show a list of names similar to the one you entered; click on Block next to the name of the person you wish to block.
Click on Block [Name] when prompted. This is the blue button that appears at the bottom of the popup window. Clicking it will add the person to your block list.
Tip
- You can also block someone on Facebook by visiting their profile, clicking the ... icon near the top of the page, and selecting Block from the dropdown menu that appears.
- Before blocking someone, you might want to consider unfollowing them first, so you no longer see their updates.
Warning
- After unblocking someone, you'll need to wait 48 hours before you're able to block them again.
