Stop Meta AI from accessing your Instagram data
Want to keep Meta AI out of your Insta activity? European users can easily opt out in their Instagram settings. In the US, there’s no opt-out option, but we’ll show how to limit data exposure. This guide also covers steps for users in other regions to check their options and secure their data from Meta AI training.
How to Stop Instagram’s Meta AI Access
US users can't officially opt out of Meta AI. To limit access, switch your profile to private. If you're in Europe, head to Instagram's settings, tap on the privacy policy, and submit the opt-out request.

United States
No opt-out option for Meta AI in the US. Unlike the EU and UK, US data laws are weaker, so Instagram doesn't allow users to opt out. Meta's AI policy states it can use publicly shared posts, images, and info to train its AI systems.
You can try a few alternatives to reduce Meta AI’s access to your data.
- Switch your Instagram profile to private. Keep in mind, old public content may still be used, and if others share your data publicly, it’s still accessible to Meta AI.
- You can also attempt to submit a Data Subject Rights request to Meta. Visit this form and fill it out. This option isn’t guaranteed, as Meta decides based on your jurisdiction and US protections are limited.
Europe
Submit the AI objection form. Go to Settings > About > Privacy policy in the app, or use this direct link to file your request.
Complete the form with your details. When asked why the data use impacts you, state that you're asserting your rights under data protection laws to object.
Send the form. You should receive a confirmation email shortly after submitting it to verify your request was received.
Elsewhere
Open Instagram’s privacy center to check your options. Different countries have different laws. To find out if you can opt out of Meta AI where you live, go to the privacy center in the Instagram app.
- To find it, go to your profile, tap the three lines in the top-right, then scroll to Privacy Center.
- If no opt-out is available, try the alternate methods listed earlier to protect your data.
Turning Off Meta AI Chat
You can’t remove the Meta AI chatbot from the search bar. But you can mute it to make it less intrusive. Here's how:
- Tap the magnifying glass icon at the bottom.
- Tap the search bar—look for the blue circle icon.
- Hit the blue arrow in the top-right corner.
- Tap the white “i” icon also in the top-right.
- Choose Mute.
- Enable Mute messages.
- Select Until I change it to mute the chatbot permanently.
