Craving a boiled egg but no stove in sight? Don’t worry! With a microwave and a bowl, you can quickly make a boiled egg in just a few minutes. Always crack the egg and pierce the yolk before microwaving to prevent it from bursting. Never reheat a boiled egg in the microwave.
Steps to Follow
Crack the egg and cover the bowl

Spread butter inside a microwave-safe bowl. Use a paper towel to spread butter inside a small microwave-safe bowl. A ramekin, perfect for baking custard, is ideal for boiling one egg, but feel free to use any size container. You can also spray olive oil instead of using butter.

Add ½ teaspoon (2.5 g) of salt to a bowl. While it's not necessary to measure the exact amount of salt, it's important to use just enough to cover the bottom of the bowl. The salt helps the eggs cook evenly and enhances their flavor.
- If you prefer, you can sprinkle more salt on the eggs after they are cooked.
Crack the eggs into a bowl. Tap the eggs against the side of the bowl and carefully separate the shell into two halves. Drop the yolk and white into the bowl, making sure no eggshells fall in.
- It's fine to cook more than one egg at a time, but it may affect even cooking.

Use a knife or fork to poke the egg yolk. The thin membrane that binds the yolk can build up pressure when the internal moisture heats up, leading to an egg explosion. Prevent this by pricking each yolk 3-4 times with a knife, skewer, or fork.
Warning: It’s crucial to poke the yolk before microwaving the egg. Failing to do so could result in the hot egg exploding, causing serious burns.
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Tear off a piece of plastic wrap that is slightly larger than the bowl's rim and wrap it tightly to trap the heat. This step helps retain the steam from the eggs as they heat, ensuring they cook faster.
- Never use aluminum foil in the microwave, as it can cause a fire.
Cooking eggs
Cook the egg in the microwave for 30 seconds at 400 W. If possible, set your microwave to a medium or low heat. While this will make the egg cook a bit slower, it’s better to start slow to avoid explosions.
- If your microwave cannot be adjusted, assume it has high power and cook the egg for 20 seconds instead of 30. If the egg is still not done, you can repeat the process.

If the egg isn’t cooked yet, place it back in the microwave for another 10 seconds on a low or medium setting. Check the yolk to see if it has solidified. If the yolk is still too soft, put it back in the microwave and cook for another 10 seconds on low or medium power. Don’t overcook it, or the egg will become too hot.
- A cooked egg will have opaque egg whites, and the yolk will be firm and orange in color.
Wait for 30 seconds before removing the plastic wrap. The egg will continue cooking in the bowl after it is removed from the microwave. Make sure the egg whites are firm and the yolk has set before consuming.
Warning: Be careful when handling the egg as it can be extremely hot.
Advice
- Cook eggs in short intervals in the microwave to prevent overcooking.
Warning
- Never microwave an egg without cracking it open first, as it may explode inside the microwave.
- Do not place a boiled egg in the microwave, as it could cause an explosion.
