With so many skincare products available in the market, selecting the right combination can be overwhelming. However, developing a skincare habit is quite an enjoyable experience. To ensure that your skincare routine is truly suitable, the first step is identifying your skin type. From there, you can build a routine that includes using facial cleansers, toners, moisturizers, exfoliating products, and masks. In just a few months, your skin will glow with beauty.
Steps
Establishing Basic Habits

Remove makeup. If you wear makeup, it's essential to remove it before going to bed. Some facial cleansers come with makeup removal features, but these products do not fully eliminate makeup. It's best to have a separate makeup remover to use before cleansing your face.
- Makeup removal pads or cleansing water are both easy to use and convenient. Simply use a pad or cotton ball soaked in cleansing water to wipe away makeup.
- Because eye and lip makeup is harder to remove, you should use specific products designed for these areas.

Wash your face twice daily. It is essential to wash your face twice a day: once in the morning before applying makeup and once at night before going to bed. Additionally, make sure to wash your face after sweating a lot.
- Wet your face with warm water, avoiding hot water. Warm water helps remove dirt, while hot water can dry out your skin.
- Apply face wash and gently massage in circular motions from bottom to top. Rinse off the face wash using a sponge or by splashing warm water. Pat your skin dry with a clean towel.

Apply toner after washing your face. After drying your face, apply toner. Pump a small amount onto a cotton pad and gently wipe it over your face, avoiding the eye area. Let the toner dry naturally, no need to rinse.
- If you have dry or sensitive skin, opt for a toner without alcohol.

Moisturize your skin. After the toner has absorbed into your skin, use a moisturizer. You can massage the cream onto your face and neck in circular motions, moving upward, or gently tap it on your skin using clean palms.
- If you have puffiness, dark circles, or wrinkles around your eyes, you can use a separate eye cream. Gently tap the eye cream around the eye area using your ring finger.

Exfoliate once or twice a week. You should exfoliate no more than 1-2 times a week to avoid damaging your skin. Exfoliate gently, using light movements. Rubbing too hard can harm your skin.
- There are various types of exfoliating products. You can use a scrub (rinse it off after use), exfoliating gloves or sponges, or even chemical exfoliators like AHA or BHA.
- Avoid exfoliating if you have active acne or hyperpigmentation.

Apply sunscreen daily. Daily sun exposure can cause premature aging, pigmentation, and other skin issues. Even if you're not planning to spend a lot of time outdoors, apply sunscreen about 15 minutes before leaving the house.
- Apply sunscreen as the last step in your skincare routine, after moisturizing and before makeup.
Managing Oily Skin

Choose a foaming face wash. Foaming face washes are ideal for oily skin as they help remove excess oil gently. A small amount of the product is enough to cover your entire face. Foaming face washes come in gel, liquid, or cream forms.
- Be cautious and limit face washing to twice daily. Over-washing can lead to more oil production and acne.

Look for acne-fighting ingredients. If you're prone to breakouts, choose products with stronger ingredients to tackle oily skin, shine, and acne. Some common and effective ingredients include:
- Benzoyl Peroxide
- Salicylic Acid
- Sulfur
- Alpha Hydroxy Acids like Glycolic Acid or Lactic Acid
- Retinoids
- Witch Hazel Extract

Apply a water-based moisturizer. Thick moisturizers can make oily skin worse. To avoid this, opt for a water-based or gel moisturizer. These moisturizers have water as their first or second ingredient.

Use a relaxing clay mask to reduce oil. Clay masks are an excellent choice for oily skin. Apply the mask after cleansing your face, leave it on for 15-20 minutes, and rinse off. Follow up with a moisturizer after removing the mask.

Avoid touching your face. Touching your face can transfer bacteria and dirt from your hands to your face, potentially causing acne. If you must touch your face, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water first.
- Never squeeze, poke, or pop pimples. Doing so can cause more pain, worsen the appearance, and ultimately lead to scarring.
Soothing dry and irritated skin

Wash your face in the morning. Since facial cleansers remove the beneficial oils on your skin, there's no need to use them in the morning. Instead, wash your face with warm water and pat it dry. Use facial cleanser at night.

Use oil-based cleansers for makeup removal. Makeup removers that contain alcohol and other harsh ingredients can dry out your skin and cause irritation. Oil-based cleansers are gentler on the skin compared to makeup wipes. Simply apply the oil to dry skin, then rinse with warm water.

Apply serum before moisturizing. Serums are hydrating products packed with water that enhance moisture absorption for the skin. Simply use a cotton pad or clean hands to dab the serum onto your face. Let the serum absorb before applying moisturizer.
Moisturizing creams with oils. For dry or aging skin, oil-based creams not only hydrate the skin but also help retain moisture. Always check the product label to see if oil is one of the primary ingredients.
- Mineral oil or petrolatum can be helpful for cracked or peeling skin.
- Evening primrose oil and jojoba oil can prevent moisture loss from the skin.

Choose soothing ingredients for irritated skin. Both dry and sensitive skin can experience irritation and flaking. To calm the skin, opt for products that include moisturizing ingredients such as aloe vera, chamomile, green tea extract, or vitamin C.
- Note that high doses of vitamin C can dry the skin. If your skin is dry, try magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (a different derivative of vitamin C).
Avoid alcohol and other astringent ingredients. Alcohol dries out the skin and irritates sensitive skin. Always read the ingredient list of all products to avoid those containing alcohol. In addition to alcohol, avoid other irritating ingredients like:
- Witch hazel
- Peppermint
- Eucalyptus essential oil
- Fragrances
- Acids
Address common skin issues

Look for antioxidants to reduce signs of aging. Antioxidants can help prevent aging signs such as wrinkles. Popular antioxidants include vitamin C, retinol, tea extract, grape seed extract, and niacinamide.
- Although not antioxidants, alpha-hydroxy acids such as glycolic acid and lactic acid can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

Treat uneven skin tone with skin brightening ingredients. If you want to reduce hyperpigmentation or dark spots on your face, it's best to choose ingredients that brighten the skin. Some effective products include:
- Kojic acid
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin E
- Arbutin
- Niacinamide
- Licorice root extract

Use brightening products for dull skin. Dull skin is a common result of dry or aging skin. To brighten your complexion, look for products containing Vitamin C, Arbutin, Niacinamide, and mulberry extract. These products work best when used together, so consider combining them in your skincare routine.

Choose gentle products if you have Rosacea. To prevent flare-ups, select gentle cleansers and moisturizers. Avoid products with alcohol, menthol, peppermint, eucalyptus oil, or witch hazel. For optimal treatment, it's recommended to consult with a dermatologist who can prescribe the appropriate medication.

Consult a dermatologist. If you're struggling to find the right products for your skin, it's advisable to visit a dermatologist. A dermatologist can help determine your skin type and identify underlying issues that may be causing your concerns. Additionally, they may prescribe medication that could help.
Advice
- Consider using natural or homemade products, especially if you have sensitive skin that doesn't respond well to commercial skincare products.
- New products rarely show immediate results. If you're starting a new skincare regimen, be patient and allow 6 weeks to 3 months for the products to take effect. Stick to a consistent morning and evening routine.
- Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated, as your skin will benefit when your body is properly hydrated.
- Never go to bed without removing your makeup.
- If you have very dry skin, choose a gentle exfoliator and limit its use to 1-2 times per week.
- Smoking, drinking alcohol, and taking medication can significantly affect your skin, leading to premature aging, uneven skin tone, and dryness.
- During dry seasons, use a humidifier in your bedroom.
Warning
- Avoid using products containing ingredients you're allergic to.
- If a product causes redness, itching, peeling, or swelling, discontinue use immediately and wash your face thoroughly with water if the product is still on your skin.
