Calling Mexico from the United States is now simpler than ever. To reach a Mexican phone number, start by entering the international exit code—011 for landlines or + for mobile phones. After that, dial 52, Mexico’s country code, followed by the 10-digit phone number. You can pay for calls to Mexico through your long-distance plan, calling credits, or apps like Skype, Viber, and Google Voice. This article will guide you through the easiest methods of calling Mexico, both by dialing and using free apps.

Calling Steps
Dialing the Number
Begin with the exit code. The exit code you enter will vary depending on whether you're dialing from a landline or mobile phone.
- If using a landline, dial 011 (the exit code for the United States).
- For mobile phones, dial +, which shares a key with 0.
- Once you dial 011 or +, you can dial any international number, including those in Mexico.
Dial Mexico's country code, 52. After entering the exit code, input 52 to reach Mexico. This code is used to call both landline and mobile numbers across the country.
Fun Fact: Since August 3rd, 2019, you no longer need to add a 1 after the country code when dialing a Mexican cell phone.
Dial the area code. Mexican phone numbers consist of 10 digits, starting with a 2 or 3-digit area code. For example, 55 is the area code for Mexico City, and 444 is the code for Acapulco.
- If you see the prefixes 01, 044, or 045 before the area code of the number you're calling, do not dial them. These were only for domestic calls within Mexico and were discontinued in 2019.
- If you're unsure of the area code for the city or region you’re calling in Mexico, refer to our Mexican area code directory.
Dial the 7 to 8-digit phone number. The full number, including the country code, should be 10 digits long.
- Some phone providers may block international calls, so if your call fails to connect, verify that your phone allows international dialing.
Paying for Calls
Check with your service provider for the latest rates. Many mobile carriers, such as T-Mobile and AT&T, include free calls to Mexico and Canada with certain plans. If your plan doesn’t cover free calls to Mexico, you may be able to add an international calling feature at an affordable rate, often cheaper than paying per minute with a calling card.
- Many US-based landline providers, like Verizon, Vonage, and Spectrum, also offer cost-effective plans with unlimited calls to Mexico.
Call and text Mexico using Skype, Viber, or Google Voice. You can call both landlines and mobile phones through these apps, even if the recipient doesn’t have the app installed. However, if both you and the person you're calling are connected to the internet, you can use these apps and others to talk for free.
- With Skype, you can pay as you go or opt for an unlimited calling plan that includes Mexico.
- On Viber, credits start at 1.8 cents per minute for mobile numbers or 1.2 cents per minute for landlines. You can also choose their $5.99 unlimited calling plan.
- Google Voice charges $.01 per minute for calls to landlines in Mexico and $.02 per minute for calls to cell phones.
Purchase voice credit online to call Mexico. There are companies offering affordable rates, clear policies, and simple services that allow you to call Mexico from any phone. A quick search using terms like "buy credit to call Mexico" will help you find these services. After signing up and downloading an app on your smartphone or computer, you can add credit starting at $5.
- These services typically have clearer pricing and fees than traditional calling cards.
Avoid using calling cards. Most calling cards come with vague terms and hidden fees. It's usually more affordable to use online calling services like Google Voice or purchase phone credit through online platforms, as they offer clearer pricing and lower costs.
- If you must use calling cards, look for those with lower rates per minute and minimal connection fees, unless you plan on using all your minutes in one call.
- Look for calling cards specifically designed for calls to Mexico, as these can often be cheaper than general international cards.
- Buy calling cards from stores that let you inspect the card before purchasing. Check the rates and any service fees. Compare different cards to find the most cost-effective option for your needs.
Calling for Free
FaceTime. If you have an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, you can use FaceTime to make free international video calls to Mexico. Even if the person you're calling doesn't have an Apple device, you can send them a FaceTime join link that works on Android phones or computers.
WhatsApp. WhatsApp is another VoIP app that enables you to make free international voice and video calls from the United States to Mexico. Both you and the recipient must have WhatsApp installed on your phones, and then you can add each other to your contact lists.
