How to Catch Squid in Stardew Valley
To catch Squid in Stardew Valley, head to the Beach during Winter evenings to fish. If you have a Beach Farm, you can also try fishing there. While Squid isn't needed for any Community Bundles, it’s essential for crafting Fried Calamari, and Elliott appreciates it as a gift.

How to Catch Squid
Wait for Winter to Arrive. Squid can only be caught during the Winter season, with a few exceptions that depend on your game progress or the amount of gold you have:
- If you've unlocked Qi's Walnut Room, you can purchase Magic Bait, which lets you catch any fish regardless of weather, time, or season. Magic Bait costs 5 Qi Gems, and the recipe costs 20 Qi Gems.
- Squid may occasionally appear in Garbage Cans during Winter, though this is rare.
- Occasionally, Squid can be bought from the Traveling Cart for 240 to 1,000 gold.
- During the Desert Festival (Spring 15-17) in the Calico Desert, if Pierre is selected to run a shop, he will offer 5 Squid for sale at 10 Calico Eggs each.
- If you prefer, Pierre also sells Calico Eggs for 150 gold each, allowing you to skip the process of earning them.
Head to the Beach from 6pm to 2am. You can find Squid on the Beach, or on a Beach Farm if you chose that layout.
- On Winter 12 and 13, you’ll be able to catch Squid all day during the SquidFest event.
Start Fishing. While Squid isn’t an extremely difficult catch, it may pose a bit of a challenge for beginner fishers who are still learning how to catch them.
- Squid displays Sinker behavior during the fishing mini-game, meaning they quickly dive downward as you're reeling them in.
Uses for Squid
Squid can be used in four different recipes. However, only one of these recipes specifically requires Squid, while the others allow any fish to be used. The recipes involving Squid include:
- Fried Calamari: 1 Squid, 1 Wheat Flour, 1 Oil
- Maki Roll: 1 Fish (any), 1 Seaweed, 1 Rice
- Quality Fertilizer: 1 Fish (any), 2 Sap
- Sashimi: 1 Fish (any)
Squid can be used to create clothing. Place a Squid in the Sewing Machine to craft a Sailor Shirt.
Squid are part of several quests. Some of these quests are available at the Help Wanted board, while others are given through different means.
- On Winter 2, Willy will mail a request for one Squid. Completing this quest rewards you with 800 gold and one friendship heart.
- During Winter, a Squid may be requested at the Help Wanted board. The reward for completing this request is 240 gold and 150 friendship points with the requester.
- Willy or Demetrius may request one to four Squid during Winter at the Help Wanted board. You will receive 80 gold per Squid, and you can keep the fish after completing the quest.
- Demetrius may post a special request at the Special Orders board in Winter (located outside the Mayor's house) asking for 10 Squid. The reward includes the same gold you would earn from selling the fish, plus the Farm Computer recipe.
Squid can be placed in the Fish Pond, where they will breed. Initially, you can place 3 Squid in your Fish Pond, but after completing two quests, the maximum number increases to 10. Squid reproduce every 3 days, and the only harvestable item is Squid Ink.
- If you're after Squid Roe, you can acquire it after reading the Jewels of the Sea power book. This book grants the ability to get Roe from any fish you catch, including Squid.
Squid can be given as a gift. Unlike most fish, Squid is liked by Elliott. If you find yourself with extra Squid, consider gifting one to him.
- Demetrius, Leo, Linus, Sebastian, and Willy are neutral towards Squid as a gift. While not disliked, it’s not the best use of this fish.
- Most other villagers do not appreciate Squid as a gift, so it’s best to avoid giving it to them. #*Evelyn, Haley, Pam, and Pierre particularly dislike Squid, so avoid gifting them Squid.
