How to Change Aquarium Water

You should replace the water in your aquarium at least once a week if you are unable to do it more often. Regular tank cleaning serves two main purposes: it eliminates any bad odors from the aquarium and helps maintain the health of your fish. If you notice that the glass of your tank is becoming cloudy, it's time to replace the dirty water with fresh water.

Find a temporary tank. Your fish will need to be placed in a temporary tank while you clean and refill their current one with fresh water. Find a suitable-sized aquarium, bucket, or basin to serve as a temporary home. Make sure the container has not been cleaned with soap, as any soap residue can be harmful to the fish.

Pour in treated, clean water. Add room temperature water that has been treated or allowed to sit overnight to reach room temperature. Be cautious when using dechlorinator to avoid spilling it, as it may leave chemical odors on carpets or furniture.

• If you choose to use dechlorinator instead of waiting overnight, ensure that the water temperature is consistent before reintroducing the fish to the tank.
• Make sure to cover the tank or place it out of reach of pets and children to prevent contamination while the water is being treated.

Move the fish. Gently scoop the fish out of the temporary tank with a net or small bowl. Try to move them as quickly as possible to avoid stressing them. Be careful not to drop the fish or let them jump out, as this could cause severe injury.

Return the fish to the original tank. Once the tank is filled with clean water, gently lower the fish into the water using a net or small bowl. Avoid dropping them directly into the tank.

Monitor the fish. Fish are likely to experience stress and may develop temperature or environmental-related illnesses during or immediately after cleaning their tank. Therefore, keep a close watch on them after returning them to the tank to ensure they adapt well to the clean environment.

• Taking care of the water in your aquarium will improve the living conditions for your fish, reducing the frequency of water changes. Consult with a professional or a local pet store expert about water treatment options.
• Be sure not to overcrowd your tank or select fish that are too large for its size.
• If you don't enjoy treating water, consider using bottled spring water to replace dirty water.
• Never replace 100% of the water at once. This can remove beneficial bacteria and shock your fish when placed back into the tank. The temperature change could also stress them.
• It's better not to house fish in small tanks. They’re too cramped and can't accommodate both a filter and a heater. Betta fish and goldfish especially need spacious tanks with filters, as goldfish grow rapidly!

• Make sure the water in both the temporary tank and the current one is dechlorinated and at room temperature before transferring your fish.
• If using a dechlorination product, carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions to ensure the safety of your fish.
