This article will guide you through the steps to change the background of your Google Chrome browser. If you are using the latest version of Google Chrome, you can use the Settings menu on the New Tab page to upload an image or select one from Google's library. Additionally, you can apply themes to Google Chrome through the browser's Settings menu.
Steps
Using the New Tab Page

- If you haven't updated to the latest version of Chrome, click the ⋮ icon in the top-right corner, then select Help, click About Google Chrome, choose Update, and click Relaunch when prompted before proceeding.

Open a new tab if necessary. If Google Chrome is not on the New Tab page, open a new tab by clicking the + icon on the far right of the tabs at the top of the browser window.

Click Upload an image. This option is located in the pop-up menu. The File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) window will appear.
- You can also click Chrome backgrounds in the menu if you want to use an official Chrome background.

Select an image. Navigate to the file location containing the image you want to upload, then click once on the image to select it.
- If using the Chrome backgrounds menu, simply click once on the image you wish to choose.

Click Open. This option is located at the bottom of the file window. This will add the selected image as the background of the New Tab page.
- If using an image from Chrome backgrounds, click the Done button at the bottom of the window.
Add a Theme

Click the ⋮ icon in the top-right corner of the Chrome window. A dropdown menu will appear.

Click Settings in the dropdown menu. The Settings page will open.

Scroll down and click Themes. This option is located at the top of the "Appearance" section.

Choose a theme for the background. Browse through the list of themes until you find your favorite, then click on the theme name to select it.

Click the Add to Chrome button. This blue button is located at the top of the theme page. The selected theme will be installed in the browser; the top of the Chrome window will change and display a portion of the chosen theme.
- If the top of the Chrome window does not change, click the + icon in the top-right corner of the rightmost tab to open a new tab. You will see the selected theme displayed here.
Tips
- You can create your own custom theme if you don't like the ones available in the Chrome Web Store.
Warnings
- If you're using Chrome on a company or school computer, you might not be able to change the background or theme due to restricted administrative permissions.
