Voicemail is a system that records messages from callers for later playback. Most individuals have voicemail accounts linked to their mobile or landline numbers, but things can get a bit more complicated if you don’t have your phone with you or if you’ve recently switched your voicemail system.
Steps
Check Voicemail on a Mobile Phone

Access your digital voicemail box using your smartphone’s touchscreen. On an iPhone, tap the Phone app and look for the square icon in the bottom-right corner labeled Voicemail. Tap this to bring up your voicemail screen. Select a message and press Play to listen. On Android devices, the voicemail icon appears in the top-left status bar if you have unread messages. Swipe down from the top of the screen to view notifications and tap New Voicemail. Your phone will automatically dial your voicemail box.

Call your mobile number by dialing it on your phone, then enter your PIN or password when prompted. If you don’t remember your phone number, you may need to retrieve it. Many phones automatically save your mobile number in the contacts under 'Me.' On iOS devices, you can find your number by opening the Settings app and tapping Phone. For Android, go to Settings > About Phone > Status. Your current phone number will be displayed here.
- Occasionally, for privacy reasons, voicemail may be locked with a code you created. Once your identity is verified, you’ll gain access to your voicemail.
- Contact your mobile carrier if you forget your voicemail password. They can reset it for you over the phone and assist with other issues. Look up your carrier’s customer service number online and call them.

Enter an asterisk (*) or pound (#) and press the call button to access your voicemail. In some cases, you may not need to press the call button but will hear an automated greeting before accessing your messages.
- Ensure that the asterisk or pound key is the correct one to press. The required key and timing may vary depending on your carrier. For most mobile providers, it’s usually one of these two keys. Try both, and if neither works, visit your carrier’s website or call their customer service hotline.
Check Voicemail on a Landline Phone

Access Comcast, XFINITY, or cable voicemail by dialing *99. Note: This method only works if you’re calling from your home landline. You’ll then need to enter your password to access your voicemail. Some newer phones allow you to simply press the voicemail button on the device and enter your password.
- If you’re calling from a phone not linked to your personal voicemail, dial your home number first, then press the pound key (#) when you hear the automated greeting. Enter your password when prompted to access your voicemail.

Check AT&T landline voicemail by dialing *98 on your phone. Enter your password, followed by the pound key (#), to access your voicemail box.
- If you want to check your voicemail while away from home, dial the AT&T service access number (1-888-288-8893). Then, enter your ten-digit home phone number along with your password, and follow the automated voice instructions to check your messages.
- Press 9 at the beginning when you hear the greeting, or press the pound key (#) after entering the service access number and your home phone number. Enter your password to gain access to your voicemail box.

Check Vonage landline voicemail by dialing *123 followed by your PIN. Once you reach the voicemail box, press 1 to listen to new messages. If calling from a phone not linked to your voicemail box, first dial the 11-digit Vonage number associated with the voicemail box you want to check, then follow the same steps as above.
