Do you want to track the traffic on your own website, or are you more interested in monitoring your competitors' traffic? Whether you're striving to attract new customers, fans, or simply curious about the popularity of the content on your site, there are many tools available to help. Several methods can be applied directly from your own website. Some give you estimates rather than precise data, while others are more technical and capable of doing much more than you might need. Whatever your level of expertise, learning to monitor both your website's traffic and that of your competitors is a key part of ensuring your business success.
Steps
Monitor traffic to your website

Access your website's analytics. If you're using a platform like WordPress, you can easily access your site's analytics. These features are built into the platform, making it simple to monitor and maintain. They provide an accurate view of your website's traffic.
- If you're on WordPress, go to the Dashboard located at the top left. Below, you’ll see several options.
- Click on 'My Blogs.' Next to your main blog, you'll find a small icon with a graph. This is 'Stats.' Open 'Stats,' and you'll be able to see all traffic data for your website.

Check the number of comments on a post. The number of comments on a post can give you a fairly accurate estimate of how many visitors your site has. While not everyone who visits will leave a comment, on average, one in 200 visitors will do so. Understanding this statistic helps you estimate your website's traffic.
- Go to the "comments" section of your site.
- Count manually if your site doesn’t display the total number of comments.
- Multiply the number of comments by 200 to estimate the number of readers.
- Keep in mind that this method isn’t perfectly accurate. It offers a rough estimate based on an average percentage.

Check the video section on your homepage. If you've embedded YouTube or Vimeo videos on your site, just click to play. If the video is set to public sharing mode, YouTube and Vimeo will show you the number of views. If it's not publicly shared, you won't be able to see the traffic data.
- Look at the lower right corner beneath the video player to see the view count.
- Note that view counts may not reflect actual views. This number includes people who clicked, skimmed through briefly, and left. Still, it offers a general sense of website traffic.
Monitor traffic with plugins and websites

Use Google Analytics. Google Analytics is one of the most popular tools for tracking website traffic. It lets you observe how visitors find your website, helping you identify strategies that attract more people.
- Google Analytics is available in both free and paid formats.
- Once registered, you'll receive a unique tracking code. Add this code to your site, and Google will track when it's accessed, who visits, and how they find your site.
- Remember to exclude your own visits from the traffic analytics. If you visit your site frequently, excluding these visits ensures more accurate results.
- Make sure to filter out bot traffic, which could distort the data.

Try Alexa. Alexa is a web analytics company providing detailed statistics about your website. You can track visits, popularity ranking, demographic data of your audience, page speed, and much more. While it isn't free, Alexa's service delivers quick, detailed, and easy-to-understand analytics. It offers various plans based on your budget and business needs.
- Alexa can be used to monitor both your website and competitors' sites.
- Alexa also offers recommendations based on your site's traffic data and history. These suggestions can help improve your site's reach and attract more visitors.

Track with Compete. Compete works similarly to Alexa. It helps you monitor web traffic from users in the United States. Additionally, it provides a toolbar that lets you access website statistics at any time.
- Although it's not free, Compete offers multiple subscription plans, each with its own features, catering to various levels of monitoring.
Monitor your competitors' websites
Identify your competitors. Tracking traffic to your own website is crucial, but if you truly want to improve your site, it’s essential to monitor your competitors as well. Understanding what they’re doing differently and how they engage their audience can provide valuable insights for decisions about your own site.
- Search for the most popular keywords related to your website on various search engines. This will give you a clearer picture of which other websites your target audience may be visiting.
- The top 10 websites are likely your biggest competitors.

Evaluate their websites. If a competitor's site has more traffic, it could be because their website is better designed or they’ve optimized their site more effectively for search engines. Compare your website with theirs and learn what you can do differently to leverage some of their success.

Use web traffic monitoring tools. Some of the website analytics tools you use to track your own site’s traffic can also be used to monitor competitor websites. Compare reviews for each tool and choose one that provides high-quality and accurate services.
- Read user reviews online or test different tools to determine which one is best for you. Many paid sites offer free trials, while others are completely free to use.
