Today, Mytour will show you how to check the upload and download speeds of your Internet connection, as well as the connection speed between your computer and the router. However, you won’t be able to view the actual Internet speed from your computer’s settings.
Steps
Check Wi-Fi with Google

Go to the Google Speed Test page. Open Google Search by typing https://www.google.com into your browser or launch the Google app on your device, then enter the search term internet speed test into the search bar. The link to "Internet speed test" will appear at the top of the search results.

Click on BEGIN TEST (START TEST). This blue button is located at the top center of the "Internet speed test" panel.

Wait for the test process to complete. Google will measure the upload speed, download speed, and latency of your connection.

Review the speed test results. In addition to showing whether your connection is "fast" or "slow", Google will calculate the connection speed based on the following three factors:
- Mbps download – The megabits per second that your connection allows for downloading.
- Mbps upload – The megabits per second that your connection allows for uploading.
- Latency – The milliseconds it takes for your Internet connection to respond to a command (e.g., searching a keyword or loading a page, etc.).
Check Ethernet Connection on Windows

Make sure your computer is connected to the router. To check your Internet speed through your computer’s settings, the computer needs to be connected to an internal cable.

Click on the Ethernet tab on the left side of the window to open the local network settings.

Click on Change adapter options (Change adapter settings). This option is located at the top right of the window.

Double-click on the Ethernet icon (Local Area Network). You’ll see the computer screen icon appear at the top of the Network Connections window.

Look for the "Speed" line. In the Ethernet Status window, the "Speed" line is located near the bottom of the "Connections" section. This number (e.g., "90.0 Mbps") indicates the speed of the connection between the computer and the router.
Check Ethernet Connection on Mac

Ensure that your computer is connected to the router. To check your internet speed through your computer's settings, it must be physically connected to the router via an internal cable.

Search for "network utility" in Spotlight, then press ⏎ Return. The Network Utility application will open on your screen.

Click on the Info tab located on the left side of the Network Utility window.

Choose the Ethernet connection. Click on the box below the "Select a network interface for information" label, and then select your internal Ethernet connection by clicking its name.

Check the value next to "Link Speed" (Transmission Speed). You'll see a number, like "100 Mbit/s", which indicates that the data transfer speed between your computer and the router is 100 megabits per second.
Advice
- Your actual internet connection speed is usually much slower than the maximum speed of your router. Using internal cables allows you to make the most of the router's capabilities.
Warning
- Your internet speed will never exceed the maximum allowed by the router or the service package you are subscribed to—the actual speed will always be lower.
