Today, Mytour will guide you through the safe and proper way to clean your optical mouse. The optical mouse has a motion sensor light located underneath it. Cleaning your optical mouse at least once a month will help reduce issues such as delays in movement, scrolling, and clicking response.
Steps

Gather Your Tools. To clean the optical mouse, you will need the following items:
- Cotton Swabs or Microfiber Cloth - These are used to clean the dirt and grime stuck on the mouse. A microfiber cloth (the type used to clean screens or glasses) is ideal because it won't leave lint behind like paper towels or other materials. You can also use cotton swabs to clean tight spaces.
- Rubbing Alcohol (70% or higher) - This is used for cleaning and disinfecting. If the alcohol is stronger than 70%, dilute it with water. Alternatively, you can use mild dish soap mixed with water for cleaning or disinfecting. Do not use ammonia-based cleaners (e.g., Windex) as they may damage the mouse.
- Lint-free Dry Cloth - Used to wipe the mouse dry.
- Cotton Swab - Used to remove dust or other debris from the crevices around the mouse.
- Screwdriver (Optional) - For removing the top part of the mouse (if possible). You should refer to the user manual or online resources for your mouse model for instructions on how to disassemble it.
- Tweezers (Optional) - Not essential, but helpful if you need to extract debris from sensitive parts like the circuit board inside the mouse.

Disconnect the Mouse from the Computer. This step ensures the mouse doesn't conduct electricity if you accidentally touch any internal components, and helps prevent potential short circuits in case of liquid spillage nearby.
- For wireless mice, simply turn off the switch and remove the batteries (if possible).

Remove excess alcohol from the cotton swab or cloth. The cotton swab or cloth should only be slightly damp.
- Important note: It is crucial to ensure the cotton swab or cloth is not too wet, as excess liquid can damage the internal components of the optical mouse.
Clean areas with dirt or stains. Pay attention to the following areas:
- Mousepad rubber
- Sides of the mouse
- Grooves you have already cleaned with a cotton swab
- If the mouse has a scroll wheel on top, debris may also collect there.

Soak the cotton swab or another clean cloth with alcohol. Be sure to use a fresh surface each time you clean a different part of the mouse.
Gently wipe the sensor area. Avoid applying force to the sensor. Instead, softly clean it with the tip of a cotton swab or a corner of a microfiber cloth. This action helps remove any debris or particles that could hinder the mouse's tracking ability.

Let the alcohol dry. The cleaning alcohol will evaporate within a few minutes. Afterward, you can use the cotton swab or microfiber cloth to remove any remaining alcohol residue.
Remove the top cover of the mouse. If the mouse is particularly dirty and you're confident in your ability, you can clean the internal parts. The process will vary depending on the manufacturer; some devices have a lid that simply lifts off, while others are secured with screws. You should refer to the user manual or search online for the model of your mouse to understand the correct disassembly procedure.
Soak a clean cloth or cotton swab in alcohol and clean inside the buttons. The areas beneath the mouse's lid are prone to collecting dust, hair, food crumbs, skin cells, etc., so it's important to focus on cleaning these spots.
Remove any foreign objects that may have fallen inside the mouse. It's not uncommon to find hair or small dust particles in the following locations:
- The scroll wheel
- The top surface of the circuit board (use tweezers to pick out any debris)
- The front part of the mouse body

Allow the internal parts of the mouse to dry completely before reassembling. After cleaning everything, wait about 5-10 minutes before putting the mouse back together and checking the results. By this time, the mouse should be fully clean.
Clean the mousepad. No matter how well you clean the mouse, if the mousepad is dirty, the mouse's tracking ability and overall performance will be unstable. You can clean the mousepad using a damp cloth, a fabric brush, or a lint roller to remove hair and small debris.
- If using a lint roller, you may need to wipe the mousepad again to clean off any sticky residue.
Advice
- If a budget optical mouse is no longer responsive or its sensor isn’t working properly, it’s advisable to consider purchasing a new one.
- For premium optical mice (e.g., Razer), it's better to bring it to a service center for repair rather than trying to fix it yourself. High-quality mice are much more complex internally than lower-cost models.
Warnings
- Be cautious when allowing any liquid to come into close contact with the mouse (including cleaning alcohol). Any remaining liquid that seeps inside can damage the mouse.
