Cleaning car floor mats is one of the quickest ways to enhance your vehicle's look, whether the mats are rubber or fabric. This process also keeps your car smelling fresh!
Steps
Preparing to Wash the Mats

Remove the mats from the car if possible, regardless of whether they are fabric or rubber. Open each car door and remove the mats, if they are removable. Avoid leaving the mats inside the vehicle while cleaning.
- It’s best to remove the mats to prevent any water damage to your car’s interior. Additionally, you should avoid allowing oil-based or foamy cleaning products to come into contact with the gas pedal, clutch, and brake pedal, as they may cause you to slip and create a safety hazard.
- Wash the mats outdoors. You can clean them at a car wash station or at home, either in your driveway or garage. Most car floor mats are removable, but some may be attached to the vehicle floor, in which case you'll need to clean them inside the car.

Start by vacuuming the mats. Use a vacuum cleaner to ensure all dust and dirt particles are removed from the mats before deeper cleaning.
- Damp mats are often harder to clean. You can absorb moisture and neutralize odors by sprinkling a thin layer of baking soda on the mats, waiting for 10-20 minutes for it to take effect, and then vacuuming it up.
- Vacuum both sides of the mat, making sure to remove all crumbs and dirt from the mats.

Shake or beat the mats to remove dirt. This step helps dislodge some of the dust stuck in rubber or fabric mats. Perform this task outdoors.
- Hit the mats against the ground a few times.
- Find a hard surface to hit the mats once more. This technique works for both rubber and fabric mats. You may also need to use a scraper to remove any hardened dirt from rubber mats before cleaning them.
Cleaning Rubber Mats

Choose high-quality mats. Car floor mats are often made of rubber. In areas with frequent rain or snow, rubber mats are great at preventing moisture from reaching the car’s interior and dry faster than other types of mats.
- It's important to choose high-quality rubber mats; otherwise, holes may form, allowing water to seep underneath, which can lead to the car floor deteriorating.
- If the interior floor begins to rot, the car will eventually start to emit an awful odor.

Clean mats using a spray nozzle. Use a spray nozzle to clean the mats, but only focus on the dirty side of the mats. Avoid wetting the underside.
- A spray nozzle will help remove sand, dirt, or food crumbs from rubber mats.
- If you don’t have a spray nozzle, you can use a bucket of water, although the water pressure from a spray nozzle will be more effective at dislodging dirt from the mats. You can also visit a car wash service to clean your mats using a pressure washer.

Wash the mats with soap. Mix laundry soap and baking soda with water. The mixture will foam and clean the stains. If you don’t have baking soda, any liquid soap will work.
- You can use spray soap or dampen a cloth with soap and apply it to the mat. It's easy to remove dirt from rubber mats, so soap and water will suffice to clean them.
- Increase the spray pressure and clean the mats thoroughly. You can also clean rubber mats with baby wipes or hand wash solutions.

Dry the mats. The mats must be dry before you put them back in the car, but if you're at a car wash, you can't wait for them to dry.
- In this case, place the mats back and turn on the car’s air conditioning to the highest heat setting and the strongest fan speed.
- For the fastest and most efficient drying, use the air conditioning on foot heating mode.
Cleaning Fabric Mats

Scrub baking soda onto the fabric floor mats. Baking soda helps remove stains from your car’s floor mats.
- Baking soda also eliminates pet odors, food smells, and other stains.
- You can also dip a stiff brush into water and baking soda to scrub the mats clean.

Apply soapy water to the mats. You can add laundry detergent to the soapy water and scrub the mats with a stiff brush.
- Mix 2 tablespoons of laundry powder with any shampoo in a 1:1 ratio, then use a brush to scrub the mixture onto the mats. You can also use this solution to clean the plastic brake pedal of the car. There are many options for cleaning these materials.
- Use a small handheld brush (a stiff brush) to gently dust off dirt from the mats, then scrub firmly. Rinse the mats thoroughly to remove the soap.

Try using a carpet cleaning spray. You can spray a carpet cleaner and leave it for 30 minutes, or purchase a special upholstery cleaner for cars at most auto repair shops.
- The carpet cleaner will either evaporate or absorb into the mat. Then, use a handheld brush to scrub the solution into the entire surface of the mat.
- You can make your own spray solution by mixing equal parts white vinegar and hot water in a spray bottle, then spraying it onto the mat. Use a brush to scrub the solution into the mat. This method is particularly effective for removing salt stains.
- If the mat has chewing gum residue, you can rub a little peanut butter and salt onto the mat and scrub it to remove the gum remnants.

Use a pressure washer or steam cleaner. Another option is to use a steam cleaner to wash the mats. This method works effectively for both car floor mats and household rugs.
- If you don’t have a pressure washer, you can visit a car wash and use the machine there to clean the mats.
- You can also put the car floor mats into your washing machine and wash them with regular soap. Spray a stain remover before washing.

Vacuum the mats again. This step helps to remove remaining water and any dirt particles left on the mat.
- Industrial wet vacuums are recommended as they are designed to handle moisture. A regular vacuum with a hose attachment can also be effective due to its strong suction power.
- Use a vacuum with a power rating of 680W or more for stronger suction. Use a narrow hose attachment for better suction efficiency.

Dry the mats completely. You can hang the mats to dry or use a tumble dryer. Car floor mats will develop a musty smell if not fully dry.
- Try spraying a deodorizing air freshener on the mats and hanging them in the sun to dry. This will help make the mats smell fresh.
- You can also tumble dry the mats in the dryer. Use a scraper to remove any lint or fuzz from the mats (just gently run the scraper over the mat to remove the fibers).
Tips
- Avoid bringing food into the car.
Warning
- Do not vacuum wet mats with a vacuum cleaner that is not designed for moisture extraction.
