Combs, like other beauty tools, tend to accumulate dirt after prolonged use. If your comb is clogged with hair, it’s time for a proper cleaning. You can effectively clean various types of combs using a mild cleaning solution and a toothbrush. If it’s been a while since you last cleaned your comb, now is the perfect time to sterilize it with vinegar or rubbing alcohol. Once done, you’ll have a fresh and spotless comb ready for use.
Steps
Basic Cleaning

Remove hair from the comb by hand. Start by using your fingers to pull out any hair stuck in the comb. Removing hair is relatively easy, so make sure to clear it thoroughly. For stubborn strands deeply lodged in the comb, use a toothpick to lift them out and then continue with your fingers.
- You can purchase specialized tools designed to remove hair from combs. Alternatively, the handle of a rat-tail comb can also be used for this purpose.

Prepare a gentle cleaning solution with warm water. You don’t need strong cleaning agents to clean your comb. Mild products like dish soap or shampoo work perfectly. Add a small amount of the cleaning product to a bowl of warm water. There’s no strict measurement for the soap, but a small amount is sufficient for cleaning the comb.

Scrub the comb with a toothbrush. First, soak the comb in the cleaning solution for about 15 minutes to loosen hair and debris. Then, take an old toothbrush, dip it into the prepared solution, and gently scrub the comb. Pay attention to the edges of the comb, as they often collect dirt and hair during use.
- However, if your comb has a wooden handle, avoid soaking it in water, as moisture can damage the wood.

Rinse the comb. After scrubbing, rinse off the cleaning solution thoroughly. Hold the comb under hot running water until the water runs clear.
- Let the comb air dry naturally. If you’re in a hurry, you can use a cloth or paper towel to dry it, or even use a hairdryer on a cool setting.
Deep Cleaning and Sterilization

Soak plastic combs in vinegar or rubbing alcohol. Plastic combs can be safely sterilized using rubbing alcohol or apple cider vinegar. Pour the alcohol or vinegar into a cup or bowl large enough to submerge the comb. Soak the comb for about 10 minutes, then remove it and rinse thoroughly with water.

Soak the comb teeth in vinegar to disinfect. Only the teeth of the comb need to be disinfected. Mix one part vinegar with one part water in a bowl large enough to submerge the comb. Soak the teeth in the solution for about 20 minutes, then rinse the comb with water afterward.

Air dry the comb. Place the comb on a towel to dry. Drying times vary depending on the type of comb. Some may take a few hours, while others might need to dry overnight.

Clean the comb handle. The handle can also harbor bacteria. Clean it during the sterilization process. The cleaning method depends on the comb’s material, but most surfaces can be wiped with rubbing alcohol to remove dirt. Afterward, wipe the handle with a damp cloth.
- Avoid using strong cleaning agents like rubbing alcohol on wooden combs, as they can damage the material.
Tips

Clean the comb teeth gently. When cleaning the teeth, especially on round combs, work slowly and carefully. Applying too much force can bend or break the teeth during the cleaning process.

Avoid prolonged exposure of cushion-based combs to water. It is advisable not to soak cushion-based combs for extended periods. Refrain from submerging these combs in water for cleaning; instead, gently scrub them with a soft brush and a mild cleaning solution.

Do not soak wooden combs. Combs with wooden handles or frames should not be soaked. Wood is highly susceptible to water damage, and soaking can lead to deterioration. Clean these combs using a brush and a suitable cleaning solution instead.
