Today, Mytour will show you how to fix a clogged printhead. A clogged printhead often occurs when the ink dries due to infrequent use, which can lead to uneven or incorrect prints. Typically, the issue can be resolved using the printer's built-in self-cleaning software, but if that doesn't work, you will need to manually clean the printhead.
Steps
Using the self-cleaning feature on Windows

Type control panel in the Start menu. The Control Panel app will appear on your computer.

Click on Control Panel. The application, represented by the blue circuit board icon, can be found at the top of the Start window.

Click on Devices and Printers (Devices and Printers). The option, represented by an icon of a printer, is located on the right side of the page.
- If the Control Panel is in Categories view instead of Icons view, click on the View devices and printers link beneath the "Hardware and Sound" section.

Open the printer's menu. Right-click on the printer name you wish to clean. The printer will be listed under the "Printers" section near the bottom of the page. A dropdown menu will appear.
- If your mouse doesn't have a right-click button, either tap on the right side of the mouse or use a two-finger tap.
- If your computer uses a trackpad instead of a mouse, press down with two fingers or tap in the lower-right corner of the trackpad.

Click on Properties (Properties) at the bottom of the dropdown menu. A new window will appear.

Click on the Hardware (Hardware) or Maintenance (Maintenance). This option is located at the top of the window.
- Some printers feature a self-cleaning function under the More Options or Tools tab.

Select the "Cleaning" option. This option is often labeled as Clean Heads (Clean Print Heads) or Clean Cartridges (Clean Ink Cartridges), but look for any option containing the word "Clean" on the page.
- If you cannot locate the print head cleaning option (or terms like "nozzles", "cartridges", etc.), refer to your printer's manual or online guide. It's also possible that the printer lacks an automatic cleaning feature.

Follow the on-screen instructions. If prompted to take action or click on anything during the cleaning process, proceed as instructed. If not, the printer will automatically clean itself, and you can continue using it for regular printing.
- You may be prompted to print a test page to verify that the cleaning process was successful.
- If the test print still shows clogged print heads, you will need to manually clean the print heads to resolve the issue.
Use the self-cleaning feature on Mac

Click on System Preferences… (System Preferences). This option is located in the dropdown menu under the Apple icon.

Click on Printers & Scanners (Printers & Scanners). The printer icon is located on the right side of the System Preferences window.

Select the printer. Click on the printer you wish to run the self-cleaning program on, located on the left side of the window.

Click on Options & Supplies… (Options & Supplies). This option is located in the middle of the window.

Click on the Utility tab. This tab is located at the top of the page.

Click on Open Printer Utility (Open Printer Utility). This option is located in the middle of the page.

Select the "Cleaning" option. The name and location of the cleaning option may vary depending on the printer, but it will usually feature options like Head Cleaning or Cartridge Cleaning on this page.
- If the top of the window has a dropdown box, click on it and select Cleaning from the dropdown menu.
- If you cannot find the "Cleaning" option, the printer may not support the self-cleaning mode. Refer to the printer's manual or online documentation to confirm this issue.

Follow the on-screen instructions. If prompted to perform or click on any step in the cleaning process, proceed accordingly. If not, the printer will automatically clean itself, and you can then use it to print documents as usual.
- You may be prompted to print a test page to check if the cleaning process was successful.
- If the test page still shows clogged printheads, you will need to manually clean the printhead to resolve the issue.
Manually clean the printhead

Prepare the necessary tools. To clean the printhead, you will need the following items:
- Isopropyl alcohol
- Water
- A bowl or small tray
- Paper towels

Turn off and unplug the printer. This will prevent damage to the printer and ensure your safety when removing the ink cartridges and printhead components.

Remove the ink cartridges. Open the main cover of the printer and carefully remove each ink cartridge from the machine.
- It’s recommended to consult the printer’s manual or online documentation to properly remove the ink cartridges.

Remove the printhead assembly. This is the cartridge tray. At the bottom of the printhead assembly, there are several small holes.
- Again, refer to the printer's manual or online instructions to ensure you are removing these parts correctly for your specific product model.
- If your printer uses cartridges with integrated printheads, you can skip this step.

Prepare a mixture of Isopropyl alcohol and water in a 50/50 ratio. Mix half a cup of water and half a cup of alcohol (about 120 ml). Combining the two will dilute the corrosiveness of the alcohol and prevent damage to the printhead.

Pour the mixture into a bowl so that the liquid is shallow (about 0.5 cm from the bottom of the bowl). You can always add more liquid later if it’s too little.

Place the printhead assembly into the diluted alcohol and water mixture. Note: The mixture should submerge the printhead (or cartridge) by about 1 cm.
- If your printer uses cartridges with integrated printheads, place the cartridge in the mixture as well.

Soak the printhead for at least 2 minutes. This allows the dried ink in the printhead to soften.

Place the printhead on a paper towel. The excess ink and moisture from the surface of the printhead will be absorbed.
- Ensure the printhead is completely dry before proceeding.

Test the printhead. Reinstall the printhead and cartridge into the printer, plug it in, and perform a test print. The printer should operate normally.
- If the printer still doesn't print correctly, try soaking the printhead (or cartridge) in the alcohol and water mixture overnight.
Tips
- If your printer uses cartridges with built-in printheads, you can still replace the clogged cartridge.
- Print at least one page each week to avoid ink clogs in the printhead.
Warning
- Some ink cartridges come with a sponge that makes contact with the printhead. You should not wash or touch this sponge.
