Cleaning your eyeglasses is a very straightforward task. Here’s a simple method to make your glasses sparkle like new.
Steps
Wash with soap and water

Rinse your glasses under a stream of warm running water.

Gently wash the glasses with mild soap (such as dish soap) and warm water. If necessary, you can use a damp cotton cloth or soft towel to wipe clean. Use your finger to apply soap in a circular motion.
- Clean the entire frame, including the nose pads.
- Do not use bleach or dishwashing liquids with citric acid. Acidic cleaners can damage the lenses.
Remove soap using a circular motion while rinsing the glasses under warm water. Rinse off the soap with clean tap water and shake off any remaining water droplets.
Use cotton cloth or soft microfiber towel to wipe along the lenses in straight lines. The glasses are clean when most of the water has almost evaporated, and you just need to dry off the frame.
- The cloth or towel should not be dusty.
Use a soft-bristled brush to remove dust and debris from the nose pads, ensuring you don't scratch the lenses.
Soak in soapy water
Pour warm water into the basin along with a small amount of gentle dish soap or a similar cleaning product.
Submerge the eyeglasses in the soapy water. Swirl them around.
Rinse the eyeglasses with cool water. Turn on the faucet to wash away the soap. Rotate the glasses in circular motions to ensure the soap is removed from both sides of the lenses with equal force.
Place a soft cloth on one lens. Fold the cloth so that it covers both sides of one lens. Put your thumb on the cloth's inner side of the lens, and your index and middle fingers on the outer side. Move your thumb/fingers gently from left to right, applying moderate pressure as if pressing the lens while slowly moving. Repeat this process for the other lens.
Rinse the eyeglasses one more time with tap water.

Gently shake the glasses to remove excess water. Before using a dry cloth, make sure to shake off any remaining water. It’s essential to dry the lenses with a cloth the same way as when rinsing with water. Instead of wiping from left to right, move your finger in circular motions. Use a cotton swab to dry the small crevices.

Put the glasses on and check if any stubborn stains or leftover soap are still visible. If so, rinse the glasses again.
Use fabric.

Prepare the cloth.
- If you’re using a damp cloth to clean your glasses, avoid drying them with a regular towel. Instead, use a soft fabric like a T-shirt to prevent scratching the lenses.

Clean the lenses.
Advice
- Avoid using rough fabric to clean the lenses, as dry fabrics can scratch them.
- Consider purchasing a case to keep your glasses clean and organized.
- Never place your glasses in a spot where others might temporarily use them, like on a table. Someone could drop or dirty your glasses while you're not looking.
- Always use high-quality fabric designed specifically for cleaning lenses.
- Make sure to clean your glasses every night before bed.
- Be gentle and use both hands when removing or putting on your glasses.
- The best choice for drying glasses is microfiber cloth.
- You can use the cloth provided with your glasses to dry them as well.
- Avoid turning the water on too strongly to prevent damage to your glasses.
- Clean your glasses at least twice a week.
Warning
- Never use paper towels to clean your glasses, as they are made from wood fibers that can damage the lenses.
- Avoid applying gloss or using dry cloths to rub your lenses. This can ruin the lens surface.
- Don’t use hand soap, laundry detergent, or ammonia-based cleaners to clean glasses with a coating. These products leave residues that are hard to remove and may damage the lens coatings.
- Anti-reflective and UV coatings, which improve vision and protect your eyes from harmful rays, can develop permanent spots with regular use. Plastic and glass lenses can be similarly affected.
- Never let the lens surface touch a table or any surface where glasses are placed.
- Be cautious when cleaning plastic lenses in high temperatures. Hot water can clean the lenses but may warp plastic frames.
- Don’t touch the dry lenses. Dust particles can scratch the surface.
- Many eyeglass frames use screws to hold the lenses in place. Be careful with these screws, as they can easily come loose. Also, frame paint may peel even with gentle cleaning. Always check the frame for issues before wearing. If screws are present, make sure they are tight to avoid the lenses falling out. When screws fall, you’ll hear a “PING.” Be careful not to lose the screw while your glasses are missing a lens.
