This guide explains how to prevent your computer from using the Internet Explorer browser. Windows 10 allows you to remove Internet Explorer as an optional feature. Additionally, you can disable Internet Explorer from the Control Panel on all Windows 10, 7, and 8 computers. Note that you cannot uninstall Internet Explorer from your computer like other programs.
Steps
Using Windows 10 Settings

Click on Apps in the Settings window.

Click on the heading Apps & features. This tab is located at the top-left corner of the window. Clicking it will display a list of programs currently installed on your computer.

Select Manage optional features. This option is found just below the "Apps & features" heading near the top of the window. Clicking it will reveal a list of installed optional features, including Internet Explorer.

Click on Internet Explorer 11. This option is usually near the top of the page, but you may need to scroll down if your computer has many optional features installed (such as languages).

Click Uninstall below the "Internet Explorer 11" heading. This will initiate the removal of Internet Explorer from your computer.

Wait for Internet Explorer 11 to disappear. This process only takes a few seconds. Once the "Internet Explorer 11" heading vanishes from the page, you can proceed with other tasks.

RestartUsing Control Panel

Open Control Panel. Type control panel, then click on the Control Panel icon at the top of the Start window.

Click on the Programs heading near the bottom of the Control Panel window.
- If the "View by" option at the top-right corner of the window is set to "Large icons" or "Small icons," click on Programs and Features instead.

Click on Turn Windows features on or off. This option appears below the "Programs and Features" heading at the top of the page or in the top-left corner. Clicking it will open a new window.

Locate and uncheck the box for "Internet Explorer 11". You'll find this option near the top of the window. Clicking the checked box to the left of "Internet Explorer 11" will deselect it.

Click Yes when prompted. This confirms your intention to remove Internet Explorer from your computer.

Click OK at the bottom of the window to disable Internet Explorer.
- This process may take a few minutes to complete.

Click Restart now when prompted. This option is located at the bottom-left corner of the window. Once the restart is complete, Internet Explorer 11 will no longer be on your computer.
Tips
- While you cannot completely remove Internet Explorer from your computer, disabling it will prevent the program from opening HTML or PDF documents.
- Internet Explorer has been replaced by Microsoft Edge as the default browser on Windows 10 computers, so it rarely opens automatically.
Warning
- You cannot disable Internet Explorer without logging in as an administrator.
