Steps
Understanding the Connection
Identify your laptop's video output port.

Identify the type of video input port on your TV.
Use the appropriate video cable to connect your laptop and TV.

Connecting a Laptop to a TV

Turn off your laptop. For older connections, it's advisable to turn off the laptop before connecting to the TV. However, with HDMI connections, this step is not necessary.

Connect the video cable from your laptop's video output port to the video input port on your TV.

Select the correct input signal for the TV. Most TVs have input connectors labeled to match their available input signal options. Switch to the input that corresponds to the connection from your laptop. Refer to the TV's user manual if needed.
- Make sure your TV is turned on so the laptop can detect it as a display device.
Turn on your laptop. The way the display shows up on the TV may vary depending on your laptop. For some devices, the image will appear immediately on the TV or show on both screens at once. Other laptops might require additional steps.
Display image on the TV. Many laptops have a 'Display' key that can be used with the Fn (Function) key. This key helps you cycle through available display options. You can choose to mirror the content on both screens or display it on only one (laptop or TV).
- Windows 7 and 8 users can press the Windows + P key combination to open the Project menu and select the display screen.
- If you can't use any of the above options, right-click on the screen and select Properties/Screen Resolution. Use the 'Multiple displays' menu to adjust how the image is displayed on the TV.
Adjust the screen resolution if needed. The resolution between your laptop and TV may not match, especially with older TVs. Right-click on the laptop screen, select Properties/Screen Resolution, and choose the screen you want to change the resolution for.
- Most HD TVs can display up to 1920 x 1080 resolution, though some may be limited to 1280 x 720. Both resolutions have a 16:9 aspect ratio (widescreen).
- If the image appears blurry, you may need to disconnect the laptop temporarily and adjust the resolution before reconnecting to the TV. For smooth display switching, the laptop resolution should match that of the TV.
Tips
- If the laptop is connected to an HD TV, some items may only display on the TV and not on the laptop screen. This is normal. To have them appear on the laptop screen again, simply disconnect from the TV.
- If you are having trouble with the cables, consider purchasing a wireless media streaming device. They are easier to use and more compact.
