The Xbox One is the newest member of Microsoft's Xbox family. While it surpasses the Xbox 360 in power, the process of connecting the Xbox One to the Internet is surprisingly simple and technically straightforward.
Steps
Wired Connection

Prepare an Ethernet cable. You will need an Ethernet cable to connect your Xbox One to the Internet. Consider the cable length and the distance between your gaming console and the Internet source: you wouldn’t want to run short on cable!
- The Xbox may come with a cable, but if not, you’ll need to purchase one. Currently, the Xbox One no longer includes a cable.

Connect the Ethernet cable to the LAN port. Located at the bottom right corner on the back of the Xbox One is the LAN port. This is where you will plug in the Ethernet cable.

Connect the Ethernet cable to the Internet source. The other end of the Ethernet cable should be plugged directly into your Internet source. Note: The Internet source could be a router or the modem itself.
- Alternatively, you might connect it to an Ethernet wall socket.

Turn on the gaming console. Once the wired connection is set up, you can proceed to power on the Xbox One. The initial startup process will grant you Internet access.
- You can turn on the console by pressing the Home button on the Xbox One controller. The Xbox One also features voice recognition, allowing you to start the console by saying “Xbox On.” The Xbox One Kinect can even recognize you through biometric scanning by identifying your face and automatically logging you in.
Wireless Connection

Access Wi-Fi. Similar to the Xbox 360 Slim, the Xbox One can easily connect to wireless Internet instantly! Equipped with built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi Direct, the Xbox One can automatically connect to your router.

Power on the gaming console. During the first startup, the console won’t automatically connect to the Internet because the system hasn’t yet saved the router’s network name and password.

Select the signal. On the Network menu, the Xbox One will display all available Wi-Fi signals within its range. Once your router is detected in the Network menu, select it to connect to the Internet. Depending on your router’s security settings, you may need to enter the password first. The Xbox One will remember and automatically use these Wi-Fi settings for future connections.
- If you’ve plugged an Ethernet cable into the console, it will automatically switch to a “wired” Internet connection. To maintain a wireless connection, simply unplug the Ethernet cable.
- You may need to adjust wireless configuration settings if the console fails to connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi. If unsure, you can reset everything to automatic settings or restore factory defaults.
