Today, Mytour will guide you on how to link your PlayStation 4 console to a speaker system. You can achieve this by connecting the console directly to the speakers using an optical audio cable or an audio extractor device. Additionally, you can connect your gaming controller to a headset using an auxiliary (AUX) cable. While wireless speakers cannot connect to the PS4 via Bluetooth, you can use an AUX cable plugged into the controller to reduce the distance.
Steps
Using an Optical Audio Cable
Purchase an optical audio cable. These cables feature a hexagonal plastic tip with a small plug in the center. You can typically find optical cables at electronics stores or online platforms like Lazada, Shopee, and others.
- The PS4 Slim does not have an optical audio output, so this method won't work for that model.
Insert one end of the optical audio cable into the speaker's optical port. This port matches the shape of the optical cable's tip and is typically located at the back of the main speaker.
- If your speaker lacks an optical port, consider purchasing an optical converter. For instance, an optical-to-RCA adapter can connect the optical cable to traditional red and white stereo analog ports.
Plug the other end of the cable into the PS4's optical port. This port is situated on the left side at the back of the PS4 when the console is facing you.
Turn on your PS4. The PS4 menu music should play through the speakers almost instantly.
- If you hear nothing, try adjusting the speaker volume.
Using an Audio Extractor Device
Purchase an audio extractor device. These devices typically feature two HDMI ports on each side, along with audio outputs for optical, mm stereo, or RCA audio cables. You can find audio extractors online or at electronics stores.
- The audio output of the extractor (e.g., RCA) must match the audio input of your speakers.
- Note that the audio quality from an extractor may be inferior to that of a direct speaker connection.
Purchase an audio cable to link the audio extractor and speakers. Ensure the cable's connectors match the audio output of the extractor and the input of the speakers.
Buy an additional HDMI cable. While the PS4 comes with an HDMI cable for the TV, you'll need another one to connect the audio extractor to the TV.
Connect the PS4 to the audio extractor using the first HDMI cable. Insert one end into the "HDMI" slot on the back left of the PS4 and the other end into the "Audio In" HDMI port on the extractor.
Link the audio extractor to the TV with the second HDMI cable. This cable connects the extractor's "Audio Out" port to the TV's HDMI input.
Connect the audio extractor to the speakers using an audio cable. Run the cable from the extractor's audio output to the speakers' audio input.
Turn on your PS4. The PS4 menu music should play through the speakers almost instantly.
- If you hear nothing, try adjusting the speaker volume.
Using Headphones
Purchase an auxiliary cable. An AUX cable (or a mm male-to-male cable) has a headphone jack on each end.
- If your headphones already have a mm jack, skip this and the next step.
- You can find mm male-to-male audio cables at most electronics stores or online platforms like Lazada, Shopee, and others.
Plug the AUX cable into your headphones. The port is usually located on one of the earcups.
Insert the other end of the cable into the gaming controller. The headphone jack is located at the back, between the handles of the PS4 controller.
- If your headphones have a fixed AUX cable, simply plug it into the controller.
Turn on your PS4 and connect the controller. Press the PS button on the controller to establish the connection.
Select your account and press the X button. This will log you into the PS4.
Scroll up to open the PS4 menu bar.
Select Settings and press the X button. The Settings option is located on the right side of the menu bar.
Scroll down to choose Devices and press the X button. This option is near the bottom of the page.
Select Audio Devices and press the X button. This option is located near the top of the page.
Choose Output to Headphones and press the X button. This option is near the bottom of the page.
- If the AUX cable is not connected to the PS4 controller, this option will appear grayed out and unselectable.
Select All Audio and press the X button. This ensures all audio from the PS4 is routed through the headphones instead of the TV speakers.
Press the PS button. Now, audio from any media you play on the PS4 will pass through the cable and use the headphones as the output.
Using Wireless Speakers
Purchase an AUX cable. Unfortunately, Sony does not allow the PS4 to connect to wireless speakers via Bluetooth, but you can use a mm audio cable (or AUX cable) to connect to the speakers.
- Unless you buy a Bluetooth transmitter compatible with the PS4, you will need a cable to connect Bluetooth speakers to the PS4.
- Most Bluetooth speakers have a headphone jack somewhere for manual connection. If the speaker's audio jack is damaged or missing, you won't be able to use it with the PS4.
Connect the speaker to the PS4 controller. Plug one end of the mm cable into the headphone jack on the back of the PS4 controller, and the other end into the "Audio In" (or "Line In") jack on the back of the Bluetooth speaker.
Start and log into the PS4. Press the PS button on the synced PS4 controller to turn it on, then select your profile and press the X button.
Open Settings. Scroll up to the menu bar, then scroll right to select the Settings icon (shaped like a toolbox) and press the X button.
Scroll down and select Devices. This option is located in the lower half of the Settings page.
Select Audio Devices. This option is located near the top of the Devices page.
Choose Output Device. This option is near the top of the Audio Devices page.
Select Headset Connected to Controller. This option is on the right side of the screen.
- Depending on your PS4 settings, this option may already be selected.
Choose Output to Headphones. This option is near the bottom of the screen.
Select All Audio. This option is on the right side of the screen. This ensures that the PS4's audio is routed to the controller and played through the connected speakers.
Turn on the speakers.
- When you disconnect the speaker cable from the controller, the audio will revert to the PS4's primary speakers (such as the TV speakers).
Tips
- For the PS4 Slim, it's best to connect the speakers to the TV, then link the console using the included HDMI cable. The TV will use the speakers as the default audio output, though you may need to select this option from the TV's input menu.
- Some HDMI-to-Optical extractors also include audio outputs for use with older speakers.
Warnings
- If your speakers are outdated and lack an optical port, you'll need to purchase new speakers or use a converter cable.
