Do you want to convert an Excel document into Microsoft Word? Excel doesn’t have a built-in feature to convert Excel files to Word, and Word also can’t open Excel files directly. However, you can copy and paste tables or charts from Excel into Word and save them as a Word document. Here’s a guide to inserting an Excel table into a Word document.
Steps
Copy and Paste Excel Data into Word

Copy the Excel Data. In Excel, click and drag to select the content you want to insert into your Word document, then press Ctrl + C.
- Press Ctrl + A to select all the data in a chart, then press Ctrl + C.
- You can also right-click on the Edit menu and choose Copy.
- If you are using a Mac, press the ⌘ Command + C to copy.
- In addition to copying and pasting Excel data, you can also copy and paste Excel charts into Word.

Open Word and paste the Excel data. In your Word document, place the cursor where you want the Excel table to appear, then press Ctrl + V. This will paste the Excel table into your Word document.
- You can also click on the Edit menu and select Paste.
- For Mac users, press ⌘ Command + V to paste the data.

Select your paste options. At the bottom-right corner of the table, click the Paste Options button to explore different paste options.
- If you can't find the Paste Options button, it means your machine has this feature disabled. To activate it, go to Word Options, select Advanced. Under the Cut, Copy, and Paste section, check the box for Show Paste Options buttons to enable it.

Click the Keep Source Formatting button to retain the Excel table's original formatting.

Alternatively, click the Match Destination Table Style button to adopt the Word document's table style.

Create a table linked to Excel. Word allows you to create a link to another Office file. This means that if changes are made in the Excel file, the table in Word will update automatically. Click the Keep Source Formatting and Link to Excel option (to retain source formatting and link to Excel) or Match Destination Table Style and Link to Excel (to match the destination style and link to Excel) to create a linked table in Word.
- These two options correspond to the source formatting for both paste choices.

Click the Keep Text Only button to paste Excel content without any formatting.
- When you select this option, each row will be placed on a separate paragraph, with the data columns separated by tabs.
Insert an Excel chart into Word

In Excel, click on the chart to select it, then press Ctrl + C to copy.

In Word, press Ctrl + V to paste the chart into Word.

Choose your paste option. At the bottom-right corner of the table, click the Paste Options button to view different paste options.
- Unlike pasting Excel data, there are two distinct sets of options for pasting a chart. You can adjust both the chart's data and its formatting options.

Click the Chart (linked to Excel data) option to update the chart when the Excel file is refreshed.

Click on the Excel Chart (entire workbook) button to enable opening the Excel file directly from the chart.
- To open the Excel file from the chart, right-click the chart, then select Edit Data. The source Excel file will open.

Click on the Paste as Picture option to paste the chart as a static image, which will not update when the Excel file changes.

Click the Keep Source Formatting option to maintain the Excel table's original style.

Select the Use Destination Theme option to apply the Word table style.
