If you have a JPG image that you want to convert to PNG format, the quality of the image will generally improve when switching to PNG from the original. However, there are still plenty of ways to convert a JPG file even if you don’t have access to the original. See more details in Step 1.
Steps
Use an Image Editing Tool
Open the JPG file using an image editing software. You can use a simple, free program like Paint or a more advanced one like Adobe Photoshop. The result will be the same regardless of the program.
- Consider searching for the original source of the image rather than converting the JPG file. JPG files are compressed and lose quality during the compression process. This means that converting a JPG file to PNG will not produce a high-quality image. To get the best quality, it’s recommended to find the original file and save the image in PNG format.
Click on File and select Save As. A copy of the original file will be created, allowing you to change its format. Give the file a name that will help you identify it after the conversion.
Select the format. In the "Save as type" or "Format" dropdown menu, choose PNG as the file format. Then click the Save button. After saving, the image file will be converted to PNG format.
Use an Online Service
Find an online conversion service. There are numerous online services that will convert image files for you. This is especially useful if your computer lacks the appropriate image editing software. Some of the best services today include:

Upload the file. The process may vary depending on the service you are using, but generally, you will need to upload the JPG image from your computer. Some services also allow you to insert an image URL from a website instead of uploading the file.
- Make sure you're comfortable uploading your image to these servers. While most services have privacy policies to protect users, trust is key. If the image is sensitive or has high privacy concerns, consider using an alternative conversion method.
- You may be required to enter an email address to receive the converted file.
- Since some services are designed for multiple formats, ensure that PNG is selected as the output format when uploading your JPG file.

Review the converted images. Once the conversion process is complete, take a moment to check the images to ensure the transition was smooth. In bulk conversions, errors rarely occur with specific images. If an issue arises, try converting each problematic image individually using the first method outlined in the article.
