Although cooking rice is usually done using a pot or a rice cooker, you can save time by using a microwave. Both brown rice and white rice can be cooked in a microwave in just a few minutes. Once the rice is cooked, simply add a little seasoning and serve it alongside other dishes.
Ingredients
- Rice
- Water
- Salt
- Broth from chicken or vegetables (optional)
- Seasoning according to your preference (optional)
Steps
Add water to the rice

Rinse the rice. Rinse the rice you'll be cooking under running water. You can use a strainer or a similar tool for this step. After rinsing, gently shake the strainer to drain the water.

Check the information on the rice package to determine the correct water ratio. We usually add water to rice before cooking, but the exact water-to-rice ratio varies for each type of rice. Check the instructions on the packaging to find the correct ratio. Typically, a 2:1 ratio of rice to water is used for most types of rice.
- More water will make the rice soggy, while less water will make it dry. If you prefer soggier or drier rice, feel free to adjust the water slightly from the recommended amount.

Choose a microwave-safe bowl to hold the rice and water. Ensure that the bowl you're using is microwave-safe. This information is usually indicated on the bowl. If you can't confirm whether the bowl is microwave-safe, opt for another safer bowl. Place the rice and water into the bowl.
- Make sure the bowl is larger than necessary, as the rice will expand when it cooks. A larger bowl also helps make the boiling process easier.
- There's no need to stir while cooking the rice.
Cook the rice in the microwave

Cook the rice in the microwave on high heat. Set the microwave to its highest heat setting. Cook the rice in the microwave for about 10 minutes. Do not cover the bowl while cooking.

Switch to low heat for cooking the rice in the microwave. After 10 minutes, lower the microwave temperature. Continue cooking the rice on low heat for another 10 minutes. Do not cover the bowl.
- Brown rice may take longer than white rice to cook. For brown rice, cook it in the microwave for 20 minutes, instead of 15 minutes.
- Do not stir the rice after each cooking time in the microwave.
Fluff the rice with a fork. After 15 minutes, the rice should be cooked. Use a fork to gently fluff the rice to achieve a light, fluffy texture.
- If the rice is still hard when you fluff it, place it back in the microwave for a few more minutes and check again.
- Be careful when removing the rice from the microwave. If water overflows from the bowl, wait a moment before taking the rice out and remember to wear oven mitts.
Season the rice

Add common seasonings like salt, pepper, and butter. You can mix a pinch of salt and pepper, along with a spoonful of butter, into the rice for a classic Western flavor. You can either add the butter to the water before cooking or melt the butter and stir it into the rice once it is done cooking.

Add the seasonings from other dishes to the rice. If the rice is a side dish for another meal, use the seasonings from that dish and mix them into the rice. This will enhance the flavor of the rice and create a balanced taste with the main course.
- For example, if you are making a salmon dish, you can add a bit of the salmon marinade to the cooked rice.
Replace water with chicken or vegetable broth. If you want to add more flavor while cooking the rice, opt for chicken or vegetable broth instead of plain water. However, using too much broth may make the rice too soggy, so it's best to mix the broth with water in a 50/50 ratio to add flavor without over-saturating the rice.
