Tilapia is a mild-flavored white fish that easily absorbs seasonings. It cooks quickly and is relatively simple to prepare. You can cook tilapia using methods such as broiling, baking, or wrapping it in foil for baking, depending on your ingredients and preferences, as outlined in the instructions below:
Ingredients
4 servings
- 4 tilapia fillets
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) butter or margarine, melted
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 cup (60 ml) grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
- 2 plum tomatoes, sliced (optional)
Steps
Foil-Wrapped Tilapia Baked in the Oven

Preheat the oven to 230°C. Prepare 4 square pieces of foil large enough to wrap each tilapia fillet.
- Using non-stick foil is ideal to prevent the fish from sticking to the foil.

Brush melted butter onto the fish. Coat the fish with melted butter to prevent sticking and enhance flavor.
- Since the fillets are not directly exposed to heat, they won’t brown. Alternatively, you can use olive oil or other healthy oils instead of butter.

Season the fish. Drizzle lemon juice and sprinkle pepper evenly over the fillets.
- If desired, you can add finely chopped herbs like basil. Avoid using more than a tablespoon of herbs.

Layer sliced tomatoes on the fish. Place 3-4 tomato slices on each fillet.
- Tomatoes are optional, but they add flavor when baked with the fish in foil.
- You can also add chopped green onions, onions, or bell peppers for extra flavor.

Wrap in foil and place on a low-rimmed baking sheet. Enclose the tilapia fillets in foil, ensuring they are not wrapped too tightly.
- Leave a small opening in each foil packet to prevent excessive steam buildup inside.

Bake for approximately 20 minutes. Cook until the fish turns completely opaque and flakes easily with a fork.

Serve while warm. Open the foil packets to release steam, then transfer the fish, tomatoes, and other ingredients to a serving plate.
- Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese if desired.
Broiling

Preheat the oven to 190°C. Line a low-rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
- You can also spray with non-stick cooking spray or use non-stick foil. High-quality foil is recommended to minimize reactions between the lemon juice and the foil.

Rinse the fillets. Wash the tilapia under cold water.
- Pat the fillets dry with a clean paper towel. Ensure the fillets are completely dry.
- Rinsing is optional but recommended if the fish is partially frozen and needs thawing or if fresh fish has a slimy coating.

Mix lemon juice with melted butter. Combine the two ingredients in a ramekin, baking dish, or small bowl.
- Butter is ideal for this method as it helps the fish achieve a golden-brown color.
- For a stronger lemon flavor, use 3-4 tablespoons (45-60 ml) of lemon juice.

Place the fillets on the baking sheet. Arrange the fish in a single layer, ensuring they are evenly spaced.

Marinate the fish. Pour the butter and lemon mixture over the fillets, spreading it evenly. Sprinkle with black pepper.
- Optional additions include herbs that complement lemon, such as onions, garlic, parsley, dill, basil, or oregano. For powdered spices like garlic or onion powder, use no more than 1/4 teaspoon. For herbs, use 1 teaspoon of dried herbs or 1 tablespoon of fresh herbs.

Bake the fish. At 190°C, the fish will cook in about 20-30 minutes.
- When done, the tilapia will turn completely opaque and flake easily with a fork.
- Optionally, add Parmesan cheese during the last 5-10 minutes of baking.

Serve while warm. Enjoy the broiled tilapia immediately after removing it from the oven or let it cool slightly.
Broiling

Preheat the broiler. Lightly spray the broiler pan with non-stick cooking spray.
- Allow the broiler to heat for about 5-10 minutes.
- Many broilers only have an "On" setting, but some may have separate "High" and "Low" options. For this method, select the "High" setting.
- Tilapia is leaner than meat and poultry, so it releases less fat during cooking. Using non-stick spray prevents the fish from sticking to the pan.

Rinse the fish. Clean the tilapia fillets under cold water.
- Pat them dry with a clean paper towel.

Mix lemon juice, butter, and black pepper. Combine all three ingredients in a small bowl.
- Optional additions include finely chopped herbs or onion powder. Use no more than 1/4 teaspoon of powdered spices, 1 teaspoon of dried herbs, or 1 tablespoon of fresh herbs.

Place the tilapia on the broiler pan. Arrange the tilapia fillets on the pan, ensuring they are not overlapping. Brush the butter and lemon juice mixture over the fish.

Broil for 4-6 minutes. Position the pan on the top rack of the oven, no more than 10 cm from the heat source. Flip the fish and broil for an additional 2-3 minutes.
- Use a heat-resistant spatula or fish turner to flip the fillets. Avoid using tongs, as they may break the fish.
- Flipping ensures even cooking on both sides.

Sprinkle Parmesan cheese over the fish and continue broiling. After adding the cheese, broil for another 2 minutes or until the cheese melts and turns lightly golden.
- The fish will be fully cooked in 6-8 minutes. Tilapia is done when the flesh turns opaque and flakes easily with a fork.
- Adding cheese is optional, but if used, extend the cooking time by 2 minutes.

Serve while warm. Let the fish cool for 2-3 minutes before serving.
