This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to craft a firework rocket in Minecraft. You can follow these instructions on all versions of Minecraft, including the computer edition.
Steps
Prepare Your Resources

Make sure you have a crafting table ready. You need a crafting table to create the components of the firework rocket.
- You can craft a table using four wooden planks.
- If you want to add blue or green dye to your fireworks for color, you'll also need a furnace.

Learn about the structure of fireworks. To craft a firework rocket, you'll need a piece of paper and some gunpowder. Additionally, a firework star containing gunpowder and a dye is required to create the explosion effect.

Defeat Creepers to get Gunpowder. These green, armless creatures hiss and explode when you get too close. Therefore, you must be aggressive when attacking Creepers; if they start hissing, back away quickly to avoid the blast.
- Usually, you'll need to hunt Creepers at night. It's a dangerous task, so make sure to bring plenty of recovery items (such as cooked food).
- Creepers don't always drop gunpowder, so you'll need to defeat several to get one or two pieces of it.

Harvest sugar cane for paper. Sugar cane is a tall, light green plant that grows near water. You need three pieces of sugar cane to make paper.

Find materials for dye. To add special effects to your fireworks, you'll need dye. Here are the colors you can find in nature:
- Red - Pick any red flowers and place them on the crafting table.
- Yellow - Pick any yellow flowers and place them on the crafting table.
- Green - Collect cactus and smelt it in a furnace.
- Blue - Mine Lapis Lazuli blocks, then smelt Lapis Lazuli ore in a furnace. This stone is a dark blue with veins, typically found deep underground.

Find fuel for the furnace. To smelt dyes, you'll need some wooden planks or coal for the furnace.
- Skip this step if you're only using red and/or yellow dye.
Create a Firework Star

Open the crafting table. Right-click on the table (on PC), tap on the table (on PE), or face the table and press the left trigger button (on consoles). The crafting table interface will open.
- If you don't want to add an explosion effect to the firework rocket, skip to the next step.
- If you want to create green or blue dye, you'll need to open a furnace.

Place dye ingredients on the crafting table. Click and drag dye ingredients (such as flowers) into any slot on the crafting table. To smelt dye, the ingredient must go into the first slot, and you must place the fuel in the last slot.
- On the PE version of Minecraft, tap on the dye ingredient, then tap the crafting table. If you're smelting, tap on the fuel source and tap the 'Input' slot, then tap the fuel and tap the 'Fuel' slot.
- On consoles, press the top-right button of the controller six times to select the 'Dye' tab, scroll down to select the dye, and press A or X. If smelting, select the dye and tap Y or the triangle, then repeat for the fuel source.

Retrieve the dye. Click on the dye to select it. If you've smelted the dye, hold ⇧ Shift and click on the dye, then close the furnace and open the crafting table.
- On the PE version of Minecraft, tap the dye and then tap your inventory.
- On consoles, the dye will go directly into your inventory once it's created. If you've smelted the dye, select it and press Y.

Create a firework star. Place one gunpowder in any slot on the crafting table, then place the dye in another empty slot.
- On consoles, select the firework shape tab on the left side of the screen by repeatedly pressing the trigger, scroll down to find the correct dye, and press A or X.

Retrieve the star. Now that the star is in your inventory, you can use it to craft a firework rocket.

Place the star on the crafting table. You can place the firework star in any empty slot on the crafting table. Skip this step if you want to create a non-exploding rocket.
- In the PE version of Minecraft, simply tap the star, then tap any empty slot on the crafting table, and repeat this for any other colors you wish to use.
- On consoles, press the left or right trigger until the firework rocket tab appears on the left side of the screen, then press the top right button twice to open the rocket section, press the right directional button to select the "Star" slot and press Y or the triangle button to add the star.

Retrieve the rocket. Press ⇧ Shift and click on the rocket on the right side of the crafting table to move it to your inventory. You can activate the rocket by selecting it in your hotbar and clicking the ground in front of you.
- In the PE version of Minecraft, tap the rocket and then tap the inventory.
- On consoles, press A or X to create the rocket and add it to your inventory.
Tip
- You can name your firework by using an anvil.
- You are allowed to use up to seven firework stars simultaneously when crafting a rocket. Each star you use contributes to the firework's effect; for instance, using green, red, and blue stars will create a firework with green, red, and blue colors.
- You can also add effects to the firework star. For example, if you add diamond to the firework star, the firework will leave a trail in the sky.
Warning
- Always stay on high alert when hunting Creeper mobs. A single explosion can cost you your life and everything you've built.
