This article will guide you through the process of creating a new empty folder on both Windows and Mac computers.
Steps
On Windows
Navigate to the location where you wish to create the folder.File Explorer
File ExplorerRight-click on an empty space. This will display a menu. Make sure not to right-click on a file or folder, as this will open an irrelevant menu.
- If you're viewing an existing folder (such as Documents), click the Home tab at the top left of the File Explorer window and then click New Folder in the displayed toolbar.
- If you're using a laptop with a touchpad, use two fingers to tap the touchpad to perform the right-click action.

Select New (New). This option is near the bottom of the menu and will open another menu.

Click on Folder (Folder). You will see this option at the top of the menu that appears.

To name a folder, simply enter the desired name and press ↵ Enter. This action will create a folder with the new name.
- The folder name cannot include special characters or symbols.
- If no name is given, the folder will be saved as "New Folder" by default.
On Mac

Go to the location where you want to create the folder. The Mac desktop is the easiest place to create a folder, but you can do this anywhere.
- You can open Finder by clicking the blue face icon at the bottom of the screen and navigate to any location, such as Documents, to create a new folder.

Click on File. This is the menu located at the top-left corner of the Mac screen.

Click on New Folder (New Folder). This action will create a new folder at the current location.
- You can also right-click in an empty space using the mouse or use a two-finger tap if you're on a laptop with a trackpad. Make sure not to click on any files or existing folders, as this will bring up the wrong menu.

To name a folder, simply type in the desired name and press ⏎ Return. This will create a new folder with the specified name.
- You cannot use the characters ":" or "?" when naming a folder on Mac.
