Home wireless networks are becoming increasingly convenient. However, without a strong password for protection, you could easily fall victim to malicious attacks or neighbors stealing your internet. Setting up a robust password ensures peace of mind, and the process is both simple and quick. Follow the steps below to secure your Wi-Fi with a strong password in just a few minutes.
Steps

Access your wireless router. Ideally, use the installation disc that came with the router, but you can also access it remotely via the internet. To access the router through a web browser, enter the router's address into the URL. Common router addresses include: 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1, and 192.168.2.1.
- Use a computer connected to the router via an Ethernet cable for access. If you connect via Wi-Fi, you’ll lose connection once settings are changed and will need to reconnect to the network and log in again to make further adjustments.
- The default username and password for most routers are usually "admin." If this doesn’t work, try leaving the password field blank. If it still fails, consult the router’s manual from the manufacturer.
- If you’ve changed the login password and can’t recall it, you can reset the router to factory settings by holding the Reset button. This will erase all your configurations.
- If you don’t have the original router documentation, search online for your router model to find its default IP address and login credentials.

Locate the wireless security settings.
These are typically found under tabs like “Wireless Settings” or “Security Settings,” though the exact labels may vary depending on the router. If you encounter difficulties, search online using your router’s model number for guidance.

Select the encryption type. Most routers offer several security options. You can choose between WEP, WPA-PSK (Personal), or WPA2-PSK. If available, opt for WPA2, as it provides the highest level of encryption for wireless networks. Note that some older routers may not support this option.
- Older devices might not connect to networks using WPA2. Keep this in mind if you plan to connect legacy devices to your network.

Choose AES encryption for WPA2-Personal. AES is the recommended encryption algorithm for securing WPA2. While TKIP is another option, it is outdated and less secure. Some routers will only allow you to select AES.
- AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) is the most effective algorithm for wireless encryption.

Enter the password and SSID. The SSID is the name of your wireless network, and devices connecting to it will need to input the password.
- Create a strong password by combining letters, numbers, and symbols. Weak passwords are easily guessed or cracked using brute force techniques. Online password generators can help you create a robust password if needed.

Save the new settings and restart the router. Click Apply or Save on the Wireless Settings page to save your new security configurations. Most routers will refresh automatically, disconnecting all wireless devices temporarily. You’ll need to log in again afterward.
- If the router doesn’t refresh automatically, manually restart it by turning it off for 10 seconds and then powering it back on. Wait until all lights on the router stop blinking.
- Update the login credentials and new password on devices that frequently access your wireless network. For enhanced security, consider changing your Wi-Fi password every six months or sooner.
Tips
- Another way to secure your Wi-Fi is by changing the network name or SSID. Using the default SSID makes it easy for anyone to find the router's default credentials or use brute force techniques to steal your Wi-Fi access. You can also disable SSID broadcasting to hide your Wi-Fi from others.
- If your router doesn’t support WPA2, opt for WPA over WEP. WPA2 is the most secure encryption method for wireless internet connections, while WEP is outdated and easily bypassed with modern tools.
- Ensure the router’s firewall is enabled, as it adds an extra layer of security. Some routers have it turned off by default.
- Always store your password in a secure location in case you forget it.
