Creating the "perfect bun" might seem difficult, but this simple solution will make it easy for you. Using a clean sock as a base, you can craft a classic, stylish, and practical bun effortlessly.
Steps

Choose a sock. An old sock you no longer use is ideal since we’ll be cutting the fabric. Opt for a sock that reaches your ankle or mid-calf; longer socks can create a bulky roll, making the bun less attractive. Shorter socks provide better support and stability for the bun.
- Pick a sock that’s intact and not overly worn. We’ll be cutting this sock, so if it’s too old and fraying, find another one or mend the holes.
- Socks that match your hair color are best, as they’ll blend in seamlessly if they peek through the bun.

Cut the toe of the sock. Use sharp sewing scissors to remove the toe section. The goal is to create a fabric tube from the sock, so cut just enough. Follow the seam (if there is one) for a clean and straight cut.
Tie your hair into a ponytail. Roll the sock into a circle or donut shape and slide it onto the ponytail. Pull the sock ring down to the base to gather all the hair inside.
Slide the sock ring to the end of the ponytail. Once the hair is gathered, move the sock ring to the tip of the ponytail to secure the hair. Wrap the ponytail around the sock ring and tuck it into the center of the bun.
Roll the sock downward. Keep the hair centered within the sock ring and roll the fabric down toward the base of the ponytail. The hair will gather around the sock. Rotate the sock as you roll to hide it inside the bun.
Complete the bun. When the sock reaches the base of the ponytail, adjust the edges to ensure no part of the sock is visible. Use bobby pins to secure the bun if it feels loose or messy. Optionally, apply a light layer of hairspray for extra hold.

And you're done!
Tips
- Dampen your hair for a sleeker and more polished bun. For a casual, messy bun, dry hair works best.
- If you prefer a tousled look, follow this method without brushing your hair beforehand.
- To achieve a softer and more natural appearance, let a few shorter strands fall loosely around the bun.
- Avoid braiding your hair the night before if you plan to create a bun the next day, as braids can leave your hair too curly and uneven for a neat bun.
- For a tidy and stylish bun, apply a small amount of styling foam before wrapping your hair around the sock.
- To create a messy bun, gently pull out a few strands of hair after finishing.
- Add personality to your look by pairing the bun with a headband or ribbon.
- For a messy bun, leave a small section of hair loose from the ponytail and tuck it into the bun after completion.
- Leave half of the sock unrolled when placing it on the ponytail to ensure the final bun looks neat and compact.
