Do you have a large number of files that need to be backed up? Do you want to preserve your data on CD or DVD without worrying about losing it due to scratches or misplaced discs? ISO files can help by storing your files and folders, making them easy to transfer and back up. You can create an ISO file from your computer's files and folders or from physical discs like CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays. Refer to the guide below for instructions on creating an ISO file.
Steps
Creating an ISO File from CD/DVD/BD Discs

Download an ISO Burning Program. Many free and paid programs are available online that allow you to create ISO files from CDs, DVDs, or Blu-ray (BD) discs. Some popular programs include MagicISO, ISO Recorder, and ImgBurn.
- Always download the burning software directly from the developer's website. If you download from third-party sites, you risk exposing your computer to malware or adware.

Install the ISO Burning Software. You can usually keep most of the default settings during the installation. However, some programs, like ImgBurn, come with a lot of bundled adware that needs to be disabled during installation. Be sure to read each prompt carefully before proceeding.

Insert the disc you want to extract data from into the drive. Copying a disc to an ISO file is called "data ripping," and it allows you to create a perfect backup of any disc into a single file. Make sure your drive supports the type of disc you want to rip. For example, you can’t rip a Blu-ray disc in a DVD drive, but you can rip a DVD disc in a Blu-ray drive.

Start the data ripping process. Look for the "Create Image from Disc" button. The name of this button may vary depending on the program you’re using. For instance, it might be "Copy to Image". The icon on this button typically displays an image of a disc to indicate the ISO is being created from the disc data.
- This process may require you to manually specify the source to copy from. Be sure to select the correct drive.

Choose where to save the file. You will need to save the ISO file somewhere on your computer during the creation process. Note that ISO files will be the same size as the original disc, so ensure that your hard drive has enough space. This is especially important for Blu-ray discs, which can be up to 50 GB in size.
- The file name should be easy to remember or recognize.

Wait for the data extraction process to finish. After setting the save location, the data ripping process will begin. This can take some time, especially for Blu-ray discs. Once completed, the ISO file will be saved in the location you specified, and you can now copy or mount the ISO file as needed.
Creating an ISO File from Hard Drive

Download an ISO Creator Tool. Numerous free and paid tools are available online to help you create ISO files from CDs, DVDs, or Blu-ray (BD) discs. Popular options include MagicISO, ISO Recorder, and ImgBurn.
- It’s important to download the software directly from the developer’s official website to avoid the risk of downloading malicious software or adware from third-party sites.

Install the ISO Creator Tool. Typically, you can keep most of the default settings during installation. Some programs, like ImgBurn, come with adware that needs to be disabled during the setup process, so be sure to carefully read all on-screen prompts before continuing with the installation.

Create a New ISO Project. Click on the "Create image file from files/folders" or "Make ISO" button to begin your project. This action will allow you to select the files and folders you want to include in the ISO. Creating an ISO from files is a great and easy way to transfer or back up multiple folders and files.
- It’s recommended to name your project accurately or use a descriptive label so you’ll easily know what the ISO file contains.

Add Files and Folders to the Project. Depending on the program you’re using, the exact process may vary. However, you’ll usually be able to drag and drop files and folders into the window or use the integrated browser to navigate through your computer’s directories.

Start Creating the ISO File. Click the "Build" or "Copy" button to begin creating the ISO that contains the files and folders you’ve selected. The time it takes to create the ISO file depends on the size of the files and the speed of your computer.

Save or Move the ISO File. Once the ISO file is complete, it’s ready to be burned to a disc, uploaded to an online storage platform, or installed on a computer for access.
- If your ISO file is too large, you won’t be able to burn it to a disc. A CD can hold approximately 700MB, a DVD can hold 4.7GB, and a Blu-ray disc can store up to 50GB.
Creating an ISO File Using WinRar

Download the WinRar Program. After downloading, start the installation process. WinRar is a paid program, but you can use the trial version to create ISO files.

Gather All the Files You Want to Store. You should select all the files at once, as this makes it easier to move them to a single location. To select all the files, press the Ctrl+A keys simultaneously.

Right-click on the selected files. Click the option "Add to archive..." to proceed with adding the files to the archive.

Save the archive. After clicking the option above, a new window will appear. Name the archive, and make sure to save it with the .iso extension.

Click OK to create the ISO file. This process may take a few minutes, especially if many large files are being added to the ISO file.
