Making sock puppets is an incredibly fun activity. The charm of sock puppets lies in their uniqueness – each one has its own distinct personality! They don’t have to resemble humans either; animals, aliens, and even computers make fantastic choices. Once you’ve mastered the basics of crafting a simple sock puppet, you can experiment with creating more intricate designs!
Steps
Creating a Simple Sock Puppet

Find a clean sock that’s long enough to cover part of your arm. A calf-high or knee-high sock works perfectly for this! You can choose any color you like. Fuzzy or smooth socks both work well. Striped or polka-dotted socks are also great options. Just make sure the sock doesn’t have any holes.

Place the sock over your hand. Slide the sock onto your hand and curve your fingers into a C-shape. Insert your fingers into the toe section of the sock. Try to position your thumb in the heel area. If you can’t reach the heel, tuck the sock into the space between your thumb and index finger.
- Open and close your hand. Your sock now resembles a puppet!
Use a marker to dot two spots above the seam for eyes. Add another dot if you want your puppet to have a nose.
Remove the sock. Lay the sock flat on a table. The dots for the eyes and nose might seem misplaced, but that’s okay. This is why you marked them while wearing the sock on your hand.
Attach the eyes to the sock. Use a hot glue gun, fabric glue, or clay adhesive to secure the eyes. For more expressive eyes, consider using buttons, pom-poms, or craft eyes. Alternatively, you can draw the eyes with a marker.
- If the puppet is female, use a marker to add a few eyelashes!
Glue a small pom-pom just above the seam to create a nose. You can also cut a triangle or circle from felt fabric as an alternative to a pom-pom. A button can also serve as a cute nose. If you don’t have any materials, simply draw the nose with a marker!
Add some decorative touches. At this point, your puppet is essentially complete, but you can add extra flair to give it more personality. For instance, you can glue some yarn on top to create hair. For more inspiration, click here.
Creating a Unique Puppet
Use fabric scissors to cut off the toe section of the sock. Find a sock long enough to cover part of your arm. Any color or pattern will work. Plain-colored socks are versatile for any character, while polka-dot socks are perfect for making a leopard. You can even use striped socks to create a zebra! Once you’ve chosen your sock, cut off the toe section along the seam.
- This puppet style works best with fuzzy socks, but plain socks are also suitable.
Cut a 10 cm long oval shape from cardboard. Find a thin piece of cardboard and draw a 10 cm long oval on it. The oval should be slightly narrower than the sock. Use scissors to cut out the oval.
- You can reuse cardboard from an old cereal box.
Cut an oval shape from felt using the cardboard template and set it aside. Place the cardboard oval on felt fabric and trace around it. Cut out the felt oval and set it aside. You’ll glue this piece inside the puppet’s mouth later.
- Pink or red felt works best, but other colors are also fine.
Fold the cardboard oval in half to create a crease. Unfold the oval after folding it. Your cardboard piece should now have a V-shaped crease in the middle, which is exactly what you want.
Insert the oval into the cut section of the sock. Hold the V-shaped cardboard and slide it into the sock. Pull the cut edges of the sock over the edges of the oval. Don’t worry if it’s not perfectly aligned; you’ll fix it later.
Glue the sock to the top and bottom edges of the oval. Lay the sock flat and open the mouth section. Pull the sock edges over the top and bottom edges of the oval by about 1.3 cm and secure them with hot glue. If the edges are a bit uneven, that’s fine. You’ll adjust them in the next step.
- If you don’t have hot glue, fabric glue or clay adhesive will work too.
Glue the sock to the side edges of the oval. Pull the sock edges over the side edges of the oval by about 1.3 cm and glue them down. Work from top to bottom. Once one side is done, repeat the process for the other side.
Attach the felt oval to the mouth section. Apply glue inside the puppet’s mouth and press the felt oval onto it. Make sure the edges align properly. This will give the puppet’s mouth color and cover the sock’s cut edges.
- If using hot glue, work in small sections to prevent it from drying too quickly.
Decorate the puppet. You can position the sock heel on either the top or bottom of the puppet. Attach craft eyes or use buttons for the eyes. Add a small pom-pom or button for the nose. If you want the puppet to have a tongue, cut a piece of red or pink felt into a long tongue shape and glue it inside the mouth.
- Don’t glue the entire tongue down so it can wiggle freely.

Add Finishing Touches to the Puppet

Decide how your puppet needs additional decoration. You don’t have to follow everything from this point. Observe your puppet and think about what character it could represent. Choose a few ideas from the list above or come up with your own creative decorations!
Create two arms using pipe cleaners wrapped in felt. Fold a pipe cleaner in half, wrap felt around it, and secure it with glue. Trim the felt so it’s about 2.5 cm longer than the pipe cleaner. Shape one end of the puppet’s arm into a hand, then attach the other end to the puppet.
- Repeat this step to make the other arm.
Use yarn to create hair if desired. Wrap yarn around your hand (for short hair) or a book (for long hair). Slide the loops off and cut one end. Tie a piece of yarn around the middle to secure the bundle. Glue the yarn bundle to the top of the puppet’s head, just above the eyes.
- The more loops you wrap, the thicker the puppet’s hair will be. Aim for at least 10 loops.
- You can also use this technique to create a mustache for the puppet!
- Leave the hair loose or trim it. Braid it or tie it into pigtails for a fun look.
- Alternatively, use pipe cleaners or cut felt to make hair.
Attach googly eyes to pom-poms to create a wide-eyed look. Glue two large pom-poms to the top of the puppet’s head. You can place them close together or far apart, depending on your preference. Then, attach googly eyes to the front of each pom-pom (not on top).
Add extra details. At this point, you can let your creativity run wild! All you need is fabric markers or regular markers. Try one of these ideas:
- Draw eyelashes if the puppet is female.
- Add a few freckles or a beauty mark under the eyes.
- Draw thick eyebrows or a mustache.
- Outline the puppet’s mouth with red to create lipstick.
Create accessories for the puppet. Accessories can add personality to your puppet. You’ll need pipe cleaners, buttons, glue, and some felt pieces. Here are a few suggestions:
- Cut a bow tie or necktie from felt and glue it onto the puppet.
- Shape a pair of glasses using pipe cleaners.
- Attach decorative buttons to the sides of the puppet’s head as earrings.
- Tie a ribbon bow and glue it to the top of the puppet’s head.
Use pom-poms, foam, or felt to turn the puppet into a monster. Sock puppets already look whimsical, but you can make them even crazier by transforming them into monsters. Try one of these ideas:
- Glue pom-poms all over the puppet’s body to create bumps.
- Cut triangle shapes from felt or foam to make spikes.
- Create teeth or fangs. White foam works best for this.
- Make horns using foam or pipe cleaners.
Tips
- Avoid using socks that are too thin or have holes.
- You can create a beard or sideburns using yarn.
- Your puppet doesn’t have to look exactly like the one in the tutorial. Let your imagination run wild!
- Your puppet doesn’t need two eyes. It could have one large eye, three eyes, or even more!
- Make multiple puppets and put on a puppet show.
- If using fabric glue or hot glue, allow time for it to dry.
Warning
- If using a hot glue gun, ask an adult for assistance.
