How to Create the Degree Symbol

In this article, Mytour will walk you through how to insert the degree symbol across various operating systems for both computers and mobile devices.

Open a text input program. This could be a word processor, email program, Facebook Messenger, or even the address bar in your web browser.

Press .Alt+0176 or Alt+248 (Windows). When you release the Alt key, the degree symbol (°) will appear in any text field.

• NumLock (the number pad lock function) must be on for these codes to work. If your computer lacks a number pad, try alternate methods.
• If this method doesn’t work, make sure you’re using the right Alt key on the right side of your keyboard.

Press . ⌥ Opt+⇧ Shift+8 (Mac). Regardless of the program, the degree symbol (°) will be inserted wherever the cursor is placed.

Open an app that uses the device's keyboard. The degree symbol can be found in the Symbols section of your keyboard.

Tap the Symbols button. It is typically located in the lower-left corner next to the keyboard.

Press the secondary Symbols button. On most keyboards, the symbols are divided into two sections. Typically, you'll need to switch to the second display window to find the degree symbol. Different keyboards have different ways of switching. Usually, you press the key with the math symbol or the ">" key to access the second display window.

Press the degree symbol key. The symbol will be inserted into your text.

Open an app that uses the device's keyboard. You can use the iOS device's keyboard to add the degree symbol, but first, you need to switch to the correct display screen.

Tap the "123" button. This button is located at the lower-left corner. When tapped, the keyboard will switch to the number display window along with some symbols.

Press and hold the "0" key. A menu containing the degree symbol will appear.

Slide your finger across the degree symbol and release it. The degree symbol will be inserted into the text you're writing.

Press .Ctrl+⇧ Shift+2. You will notice that nothing happens. This is completely normal.

Press .Space. The degree symbol will be created if you previously used the shortcut above.

Repeat the steps above to insert the degree symbol. This shortcut works in most Office programs, including Outlook and PowerPoint, but it is not functional in Excel.

Click on the Start button. This button is located at the bottom-left corner of your screen, and it may simply be the Windows icon.

Type .character map in the search bar or Start menu. The Character Map app will appear at the top of the search results.

Click on the Character Map program. A window will pop up displaying a grid of special characters available for use.

Double-click on the degree symbol. On the default screen, you will find the symbol located at the center of the character map, below the standard alphabet, usually one or two lines down.

Click the "Copy" button. The degree symbol will be copied to your clipboard.

Paste the degree symbol. After copying, you can paste the symbol anywhere just like you would with any other copied text. Press Ctrl+V to paste, or right-click and select "Paste" from the menu.

Click on the Apple menu and select "System Preferences". You need to enable Character Viewer to quickly access it at any time, which you can do from the System Preferences menu.

Select the "Keyboard" menu option. The keyboard settings will open up.

Check the box for "Show viewers for keyboard, emoji, and symbols in menu bar." A new menu bar icon will appear in the top-right corner. This is the Viewer button.

Click the Viewer button and choose "Show Emoji & Symbols". A new window will open up.

Select the "Punctuation" category. Various symbols will appear in the main window.

Double-click the degree symbol. It is located just below the " symbol. The degree symbol will be inserted at the current cursor position.

Add the degree symbol to your favorites list. If you use it frequently, click the "Add to Favorites" button to add it to the quick-access list. The Favorites list is located at the top of the Emoji & Symbols viewer.
