You’ve likely seen YouTube videos that rack up thousands of views. Have you ever thought about creating your own video on YouTube? Here’s how you can do it.
Steps

Consider what you want to achieve with your video. It doesn’t have to be something extraordinary, but it should be engaging enough to capture the attention of YouTube viewers. Ask yourself the following questions and jot down your answers.
- How long will my video be? YouTube has a 15-minute limit on video length. If your video exceeds 15 minutes, you’ll need to split it into separate videos (e.g., Part 1, Part 2, …).
- What environment will my video be in? You may need to adjust your camera settings accordingly.
- Is my subject matter interesting? Will anyone watch it? If your video starts off dull, viewers may not stick around to watch the rest. Don’t make a video only for your own interest unless you’re posting it just for fun.

Make sure everything is set before you start filming. You don’t want to realize halfway through that something’s missing!
- If you’re narrating, speak clearly and loudly so that your audience can hear you. Drink some water before you begin filming. Keep a water bottle within reach, but don’t drink loudly while recording!

The next steps depend on the device you’re using to record.
For camcorder users

Turn on the camcorder. Make sure it’s set to “movie” mode, not “picture” mode. Ensure that the focus is sharp and clear. If the video is blurry, watching it will be very difficult.

Ensure the camcorder is ready. Watching a shaky or blurry video is uncomfortable and frustrating. If you can’t hold the camera steady, use a tripod or place it on top of a stack of books. Make sure the shot is clear, and the subject is fully framed—don’t let only half of it appear in the shot.

Finally, once you’re ready, make sure to press the record button. Depending on the type of camcorder you’re using, the record button may also be the one you use to take photos. Ensure that the camcorder is working properly before you begin recording.

Record your video. When you're finished, press the record button again to stop.

Connect your camcorder to your computer and transfer the video into files. Make sure it is saved.

Open your video and check the quality. If you notice any mistakes, you can use Windows Live Movie Maker to correct them. If you don't have Windows Live Movie Maker installed on your computer, you can easily download it for free from the Internet. Edit your video as needed. You can even add music!

Watch your video a few more times and add animations, captions, or title pages. Make sure you've fixed all mistakes and that the video looks great before uploading it to the public. Ensure your video doesn't contain any copyrighted material. If you're using a song as background music, include the title and artist’s name in your description. You must credit them, or you could run into trouble!

When your video is ready, upload it. In the video editing software you’re using, there should be a YouTube icon somewhere. Look for it and click on it.
- You’ll be prompted to sign in to your YouTube account.
- Next, YouTube will ask you to fill in details about the video and its content. You’ll be asked to enter a title, description, and tags if needed. You will also need to select a category for your video. Choose the category that best matches your video's content.
- After filling in the details, click “OK,” and YouTube will start uploading your video. Depending on the length of your video, this process may take a few minutes.

After you've uploaded your video to YouTube, it will be made public. Congratulations! You’ve just uploaded your very first video!
For iPad users

To record your video, switch to camcorder mode on your iPad.

Press the record button and start filming your video. However, iPad users can only make short videos, so it’s best to use a camcorder for longer recordings.

Once you’re done recording, go to the video storage - not the photo storage. You’ll see a small upward arrow in the top-right corner.

Click on that arrow. It will give you three options for uploading your video. Click on the YouTube icon.

Once you’ve entered the information, click “OK” and YouTube will start uploading your video. Depending on the video’s length, this process may take a few minutes.
