Steps
Double Crochet – American Style

Yarn over and pull through from back to front.

Insert the hook into the stitch you want to work on. Typically, you'll insert it into the hole closest to the hook, or if you're starting with a foundation chain, use the double crochet in the fourth chain stitch. Look at the pattern for accurate placement.
Yarn over and gently pull the yarn through the stitch. In other words, pull the yarn through the loop on the hook. You should now have three (3) loops on your hook.
Yarn over and pull the yarn through the first two (2) loops on the hook.
Yarn over and pull the yarn through the first two (2) loops on the hook.
You have now completed one (1) American style double crochet stitch. You will see one (1) loop remaining on the hook.
Double Crochet – UK Style
Insert the hook into the stitch you want to work on. Usually, you'll place it into the hole closest to the hook, or if you're starting with a basic chain, use the double crochet on the second chain stitch. Check the pattern for accurate placement.
Yarn over and then rotate the hook towards you.
Pull the yarn through the stitch. Now you’ll have two (2) loops on your hook.
Yarn over again and pull the yarn through both loops on the hook.
You’ve now completed one English-style double crochet stitch; you should notice one stitch remaining on the hook.
Advice
- While the basic crochet chain with a U.S. Double Crochet requires three stitches, the English Double Crochet technique only requires one stitch.
