Using a hot curling iron can cause hair damage. Instead, try these safe overnight curling methods detailed below. The curls might not be as tight as those from a curling iron, but with a little practice, you can still achieve nicely defined waves. The cocoon curl method delivers the best results, though it might be a bit challenging if you're trying it for the first time.
Steps
Maintain Your Curls Overnight

Moisten your hair. Wash your hair and apply conditioner. Wait until your hair is slightly damp, not soaking wet to the point of dripping.
- If your hair is tangled, detangle it before washing.

Style your hair. Any type of twist will create curls when left overnight. A loose twist around thicker sections of hair will result in soft waves, while a tighter twist around medium-sized sections will create tighter curls. You can choose from the following styles:
- Plait your hair into two braids for waves or four braids for curls. For tighter curls, you may want to braid the lower half of your hair with a ribbon.
- Bun your hair on both sides for soft waves.
- Make a high ponytail. Wrap an elastic around it, then wrap a donut-shaped hair tie around the ponytail. Take thumb-sized sections of the ponytail and wrap them around the hair tie until your entire hair is in a bun. Use bobby pins to secure the end.

Spray with hairspray. Lightly mist hairspray on the bun to define the curls. Be gentle to avoid damaging your hair.

Leave your hair overnight, then carefully undo the bun and let the curls fall out in the morning. If the curls feel stiff, gently shake them out with your hands.
- Spray some more hairspray to hold the curls longer.
Curling Hair with Hair Ties

Mix hair gel with water. Mix about 4-5 drops of each ingredient to get the right consistency.

Moisten a section of hair. Divide your hair into 4 to 9 sections. Wet your palms with a water-gel mixture and gently run it through a section of hair 3-4 times to dampen it.
- The more sections you divide your hair into, the tighter the curls will be.

Wrap hair around an elastic band. Pull a section of hair through an elastic band. Wrap the hair around and around the band until you reach the ends.
- If you have thick hair, using a headband may give better results.

Repeat the process with the remaining sections of hair. Continue wrapping each section with a new elastic band until your entire head of hair is wrapped.
- For the best results, consider spraying hairspray to keep the curls in place.

Let your hair down the following morning. Keep the hair wrapped overnight and release it in the morning.
Curling Hair Using the Cocoon Method

Start with a small section of hair. It's typically easiest to begin from the back of the head, but you can start from any position that's convenient.
- If your hair is curly, like African hair, you should twist the hair to create more defined curls.
- The cocoon-style curling method can be more challenging than the others. It requires time and practice, but you'll eventually get the hang of it.

Place two fingers close to your hair. Position your index and middle fingers close to the hair, about 2.5 cm away from the scalp.
- Try to keep your nails outside of the hair section.
- If you're right-handed, use your left hand; if you're left-handed, use your right hand.

Wrap a small section of hair around your finger. Wrap the hair so that the tail end points upwards, then stop. Now you will have a 'U'-shaped curl, almost like a noose, without the end part of the curl.

Twist the hair above the U-shaped loop. Twist the hair above the U-shaped loop, wrapping it around the section of hair left between the loop and the scalp. Continue twisting until there's about 2.5 cm of hair left.

Pull the tail end of the hair through the loop. Using two fingers positioned inside the loop, grab the tail of the hair. Pull the tail through the loop, then release the two fingers. Keep it in place without pulling the hair all the way through.
- The large loop is now filled with hair. One end of the loop will have the hanging tail, while the other end has a small loop of hair, which will almost be straight.

Press down to tie the knot. Continue holding the hair tail near the large loop. Use your other hand to push the opposite side of the hair towards the loop to tie the knot. Be careful not to let the tail slip out too much, or the knot will come undone.

Repeat the same action for your entire hair. Keep going until all sections of hair you wish to tie are knotted.

Leave it like this overnight. In the morning, simply pull out the small hair ends sticking out from each knot.
