PlayStation 4 (PS4) is a gaming console that allows multiple user profiles to be set up on a single system. If you need to remove a user, the process is very straightforward.
Steps
Remove other users from the primary account
Log into your primary account. Turn on your PS4 and enter your login information as usual. To remove other accounts, you must be logged in as the main user.
Go to 'Settings'. From the home screen, push the left joystick up to open the options menu. Continue using the left joystick to navigate, scroll right until you find the 'Settings' toolbox icon. Press 'X' to select it.
Open 'Login Settings'. From the settings menu, scroll down to 'User Management'. From there, press 'Delete User'.
Delete the user you want to remove.
Scroll down to the user you wish to delete. Press 'X' and confirm to remove the user. Then, simply follow the on-screen instructions from PS4.
- If deleting the primary account, PS4 will need to restart. After pressing 'Delete', you’ll be prompted to confirm the restart of PS4. At this point, your system will be restored to factory settings. Any unsaved data will be permanently lost.
- To back up data, go to Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage. Select 'Cloud' to store data in the cloud or 'USB Storage' to back up to a USB device like an external hard drive. Choose the games and apps you want to back up and press 'Copy'.
- Do not turn off the PS4 during the backup process as it could cause serious damage.
Check if the account was successfully deleted. Log out of PS4 and log back in. If the user no longer appears on the options screen, you have successfully removed them from the system.
Proceed to reset factory settings from the main account.
Log in to your main account. Turn on the PS4 and enter your login credentials as usual. You will need to log in as the primary user.
Go to “Settings”. From the home screen, push the left control stick up to open the options menu. Continue using the left stick to navigate, scrolling right until you find the “Settings” toolbox. Press “X” to select it.
Open the “Initialization” screen. From the settings menu, scroll down to “Initialization”. From there, click on “Initialize PS4”. Choose “Full” and follow the on-screen instructions. The PS4 will be restored to factory settings, and any unsaved data such as trophies, screenshots, etc. will be erased.
- To back up data, go to Settings>Application Saved Data Management>Saved Data in System Storage. Choose "Cloud" to save to the cloud or "USB Storage" to save to a USB device like an external hard drive. Select the games and apps you want to back up, then press "Copy".
- A full factory reset will take several hours. Do not turn off the PS4 during this process, as it could cause serious damage.
Delete a user by performing a factory reset
Back up any data you don't want to lose. Go to Settings>Application Saved Data Management>Saved Data in System Storage. Select "Cloud" to store in the cloud or "USB Storage" to save to a USB device such as an external hard drive. Choose the games and apps you wish to back up and press "Copy".
Power off. Press and hold the power button for a few seconds. Wait for a beep and the indicator light to turn red. Release the button.
Power on. Press and hold the power button again. You will hear two beeps, the second one occurring approximately 7 seconds after the first. Release the button.
Press “Restore Default Settings.” Once the PS4 restarts, it will enter Safe Mode. Use the left joystick to navigate to the “Restore Default Settings” option. Press “X” to select and follow the on-screen instructions. Your PS4 will be reset to factory settings, and any unsaved data such as trophies, screenshots, etc., will be deleted.
- In Safe Mode, the controller must be connected to the console via a USB cable.
- This method should only be used if you need to start the PS4 without a password.
