How to determine the gender of a puppy

Lift the puppy carefully. Newborn puppies are fragile and very weak at this age. Be extra cautious when lifting them. Their hearing and vision are still developing, so they may get anxious or scared when you pick them up.

• Never pick up a puppy by its tail! Instead, slide your hand underneath its belly to provide a secure lift.
• Limit how often you pick up the puppy during the first one to two weeks after birth. Too much handling may upset the mother and negatively affect the puppies.
• If possible, wait until the puppy is at least 3-4 weeks old before checking its gender. By then, the puppy will have spent enough time bonding with the mother and will be more developed.

Place the puppy carefully in your palm. You will hold the puppy on its back with its legs facing up. Make sure to support its entire body to avoid putting stress on its spine. Do not hold the puppy too tightly.

• If someone can help you hold the puppy, it will be easier to observe them.
• You can also place a warm towel on a table and gently lay the puppy on its back. The towel will help keep the puppy warm.

Act quickly. Newborn puppies cannot regulate their body temperature for the first few weeks of life. They are very susceptible to cold. You should not keep the puppy away from its mother for too long, ideally no more than 5-10 minutes.

• Use a heating pad or a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel to keep the puppy warm in its bedding.

Look for signs of distress. If the puppy becomes overly stressed, such as whining or struggling, return it quickly to the nest with its mother. The mother may also become stressed if she is not accustomed to people handling her pup. If you notice signs of stress in the mother, such as barking excessively, you should return the puppy to her immediately.

Check the puppy's belly. You will notice its “navel” or umbilical scar. The puppy’s navel is typically located in the center of its belly, just below the rib cage. If the puppy is only a few days old, it may still have its umbilical cord. Once the cord shrinks and falls off, usually within a few days, there will be a small scar on the belly. This scar is lighter in color and slightly thicker than the surrounding skin.
