Detoxifying the body, also known as cleansing or detox, is the process of removing toxins from the body. For a long time, many people have claimed to have completely detoxed their bodies in just a few days through certain diets. Although no method has been scientifically proven to eliminate toxins from the body, many people report feeling more alert and healthier during and after the detox. This could be due to the cessation of processed foods.
Note: This article does not provide information about body detox for individuals undergoing treatment for alcohol or other substance addictions. Detoxing from alcohol or other substances, particularly benzodiazepines, should be done under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
Steps
Short-Term Detox

- Eat citrus fruits. Oranges, tangerines, grapefruits, lemons, and limes are among the best for detoxing. You can eat them individually or mix them with other fruits.
- Try detoxing with grapes. Grapes contain antioxidants that help combat cancer and obesity, as well as prevent blood clots. They are also rich in potassium and Vitamin C. Eat only grapes (any type you prefer) for 3 to 5 days.

- Consider drinking fruit juice or vegetable juice during the detox to ensure that your body still gets the necessary nutrients.
- If weight loss is your goal, you will need to adjust your diet once the liquid detox is complete. Otherwise, you might regain the weight.

- Fiber can be found in kidney beans, black beans, apples, soybeans, blueberries, and artichokes.
- Potassium is abundant in carrots, bananas, lima beans, white potatoes, cooked leafy greens, and sweet potatoes.
- Vitamin C is found in kiwis, strawberries, kale, cauliflower, potatoes, oranges, Brussels sprouts, mangoes, and bell peppers.
- Folate is present in spinach, cucumbers, asparagus, oranges, and black-eyed peas.
- Healthy fats are found in avocados, olives, and coconuts.
Long-Term Detox

- Be sure to check labels to see if the food is organic. Organic foods are usually marked with a green “USDA Organic” certification label from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

- Drink lemon water. Adding orange or lemon juice to your daily water intake can aid in fat digestion. Additionally, adding some flavor to your water will make it easier to drink the recommended 8 glasses a day.

- Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless toxic gas produced by stoves, ovens, and car engines. Symptoms of poisoning include headaches, dizziness, and even coma. It’s important to use a carbon monoxide detector in your home and install proper ventilation systems.
- Homes and buildings should be tested for Radon gas and Asbestos dust levels.

Advice
- Detox with a friend. Both of you can help each other through difficult stages, celebrate successes together, and share detox menus and tips.
- Eat slowly. During detox, take your time to chew thoroughly and slowly. This approach also supports digestion.
- Set aside time for light exercise. Yoga, Pilates, swimming, or brisk walking are all good options. Avoid strenuous activities like running or weightlifting during this period.
- Get a massage. You can either use a professional service or exfoliate your skin at home with a glove.
- Rest. You may feel stronger or more tired during the detox process. Regardless, make sure you get enough sleep. Aim for at least 8 hours of sleep each night, and take naps if needed.
Warnings
- Even if you feel great, limit your detox to 10 to 14 days. Prolonged fasting or dieting can disrupt your metabolism.
- Don’t push yourself to the point of fainting. If you feel faint or actually faint, the diet you’re following is likely unsafe. Immediately eat a piece of bread or a biscuit to raise your blood sugar, or drink an electrolyte-rich beverage. Lie down or sit with your head close to your knees if possible. Discontinue the diet immediately.
- Do not follow a liquid detox for more than 3 consecutive days.
- Never follow any detox method found online without professional guidance. Some methods can be very dangerous. Always consult a nutritionist before starting a detox program.
- Some detox methods may make you feel fatigued during the first couple of days. Take it easy and avoid strenuous activities.
- Most healthcare professionals agree that your liver and kidneys can naturally detoxify the body without any special detox regimen. Keep in mind, you may not notice any significant changes in your health.
