This wiki page provides instructions on how to disable the Function (Fn) key features on your computer's keyboard.
Steps
Using the Num Lock Key on Windows

Locate the Num Lock key on your keyboard. This key may be found within the numeric keypad section, or it could be integrated with another key.
- The Num Lock key is primarily used to lock the number pad keys, but you can also use it to disable the Fn key.

Press and hold the Fn key on your keyboard. This action will enable the Num Lock key and deactivate the Fn key functionality.

Press the NumLock key while holding the Fn key. This action will immediately disable all Fn key functions.
- The Num Lock key may also appear as Num ⇩ on some keyboards.
Using the Fn Lock key on Windows

Locate the Fn Lock key on your keyboard. The Fn Lock key typically displays a lock symbol with the letters 'Fn'.
- It is often combined with another function key (F1-F12) or placed on a separate key such as Esc.

Press and hold the Fn key on your keyboard. This action will allow you to use the Fn Lock feature to disable the Fn key.

Press the Fn Lock key while holding down the Fn key. This action will immediately disable all Fn key functions.
- The Fn Lock key works similarly to the Caps Lock key, allowing you to toggle it on and off as needed.
Using a Mac

Open the Apple menu on the menu bar. Click the Apple icon located in the upper-left corner of the screen to open the Apple menu.

Click on System Preferences on the menu. This action will open the System Preferences window in a new pane.

Click on Keyboard in the System Preferences menu. This option appears as a keyboard icon in the second row of the System Preferences window. The input method settings will open.

Click on the Keyboard tab at the top. This option is located next to the 'Text' section on the Keyboard page.
- The Keyboard menu might automatically open to this tab. In that case, you won't need to click on it manually.

Enable "Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys". By selecting this option, the Fn key will be disabled, except for the specialized functions displayed on each F key.
- You can find this option at the bottom of the Keyboard menu.
- The F keys at the top row will now function as standard function keys (F1–F12), and you won’t need to press Fn to use them.
- If you want to use a specialized function printed on the F keys, simply hold the Fn key while pressing the respective F key. This will be the only function available for the Fn key.
