The pop-up blocker feature in Internet Explorer is designed to block most windows that open automatically when browsing the web. While this feature is very effective at blocking ads, it can sometimes cause issues on websites that rely on pop-ups. In such cases, you may need to either completely disable the blocker or adjust its settings to allow certain pop-ups in order to access these sites again.
Steps to follow
Launch Internet Explorer. If you’re using a Surface tablet or Windows, click on "Desktop" from the Start screen or from the All Apps list, then click the Internet Explorer icon on the taskbar.
Click or tap the gear icon or the Tools menu. If you can’t find it, press the Alt key and then click the tools menu from the dropdown.
Select "Internet options" to open the Internet Options window.
Click or tap on the .Privacy settings.
Uncheck the "Turn on Pop-up Blocker" option. Click or tap Apply to save the changes.
Consider adjusting the pop-up blocker settings instead of disabling it entirely. Click or tap the Settings button to open the Pop-up Blocker settings page. Use the dropdown menu at the bottom of the window to change the setting to "Low." This will allow most pop-ups from trusted websites while blocking suspicious ones. You can also add sites to a whitelist for continuous pop-up access.
- If you disable the Pop-up Blocker completely, you risk exposure to malware and intrusive ads. We recommend adding sites you want to allow pop-ups from while keeping the blocker enabled.
Recommendation
- When the Pop-up Blocker feature is enabled and a pop-up is blocked, a small notification bar will appear beneath the address bar. By clicking this bar, you can temporarily allow the pop-up, add the site to the allowed list, or adjust your blocking settings.
