Although Sony has recently replaced the PSP system with the PS Vita, the PSP remains a handheld gaming console with a diverse library of games. Follow the guide below to learn how to play free games on your PSP.
Steps
Use a Memory Card for Additional Games

Purchase a memory card. PSP games are stored on UMD (Universal Media Disc) discs, and the games load the disc image files, known as ISOs, which require a memory card (MS) for storage. The PSP supports PRO-DUO memory cards, but you can also use a Micro SD with a PRO-DUO adapter. The PSP supports memory cards up to 32GB. Opt for a high-capacity memory card to store more games.

Format the PSP memory card by following these steps.
- Locate and remove the cover on the left side of the PSP, then insert the memory card.
- Press the "Home" button at the bottom left corner of the PSP (the button with the PlayStation logo).
- Use the directional buttons to navigate to "Settings" and then access the "System Settings" menu.
- Select the "Format Memory Stick" option.
- Confirm the action by choosing "Yes" in the on-screen menu. The PSP will then format the memory card, which only takes a few seconds.

Determine the firmware installed on your PSP. Firmware is the operating system used by the PSP to store data and execute functions. To play downloaded games (ISOs), you need to "hack" the PSP, a process explained in detail later. First, identify the firmware version:
- Click on "Home."
- Navigate to and select "Settings."
- Open the "System Settings" menu.
- Choose "System Information." The firmware version will be displayed on the screen.
Play Homebrew Games

Learn about homebrew. Homebrew refers to programs (such as games and emulators for older systems) created by independent developers and often distributed for free. The downside of running homebrew on a PSP is that you need to hack the firmware to install unauthorized programs.

Be aware of the risks. Hacking the PSP firmware is not a serious legal issue, but it may prevent the device from running commercial games. While the homebrew community continually improves reliability and compatibility, issues still exist. Back up all files and electronic data to a secondary memory card before proceeding, in case of errors.

Update to the latest official firmware version for your PSP system. You can use either official or custom firmware. The most recent official firmware version for PSP is 6.60. If your device is running an older version, it’s recommended to update, as newer games may not work on outdated firmware. Visit Sony’s official website and download the latest firmware, which includes detailed instructions for the update process. Once updated to version 6.60, you can install custom firmware (CFW).

Obtain custom firmware. The most suitable CFW for PSP models (1000/2000/3000/e1000 or Go!) is "PRO." All models are compatible with PRO CFW. Follow these steps to install:
- Download 6.60 PRO-C fix3 CFW. While C2 is a newer version, it has issues with playing PSN games, so PRO-C fix3 is recommended.
- Enable USB mode. Navigate to the PSP’s “Settings” menu and select “USB mode.” Connect the PSP to your computer using a USB cable and access the memory card. Ensure the memory card is inserted into the PSP and navigate to its root directory.
- the firmware. The firmware includes three folders (PRO Update, CIPL Flasher, and Fast Recovery). these into the "PSP\GAME\" directory on the memory card.
- Exit USB mode. Disconnect the PSP from your computer and exit USB mode using the appropriate option. You may delete the files from your computer if desired.

Install custom firmware. Access the PSP menu and select “Game/Memory Stick.” From here, choose the “PRO Update” icon. Press X to launch the firmware.
- Permanently install the firmware. After installing homebrew firmware, you’ll need to either permanently install it or know how to restore it for homebrew games. The method depends on your PSP model.
- For 1000-series and 2000-series models, go to the “Game/Memory Stick” menu and select the “CIPL Flasher” icon. Press X to permanently install the firmware.
- For 3000-series and GO-series models, security measures prevent permanent installation. However, you can use the PSP’s Fast Recovery utility to restore custom firmware when needed.

Download homebrew games. Now that everything is set up and running smoothly, simply search online for “PSP homebrew games” to find results. Many games are emulated versions of older titles from other systems, while others are custom-designed games.
Commercial Games (Illegal)

Be aware of your actions. While game piracy isn’t prosecuted as aggressively as music or movie piracy, there’s no guarantee you won’t face consequences. Although the risk is relatively low, the only way to avoid legal issues is to purchase PSP games. Illegally copying games puts you at risk of trouble.
- For smaller game releases, you’re directly impacting the developers/publishers. Think carefully before pirating original and unique games if you want them to release more content.

Download PSP games. There are two primary methods to find and download PSP game files to your computer.
- Torrent files. Learn how to use torrents; essentially, you need a program to run the torrent file of the game you want, which collects pieces of the game from other users. Avoid paying for torrents or torrent programs.
- Use torrent search engines to browse multiple torrent libraries at once. Choose files with the most positive feedback to ensure you don’t download unwanted content.
- Direct downloads. Many websites offer free PSP games. Click through until you reach the download link (often hosted on services like uploaded.net or mega.co.nz) and activate the download.
- PSP game files typically use the .iso extension. Ensure the file you download is or contains an ISO format (in cases of ZIP or RAR files). Avoid running or downloading files with EXE extensions.

Transfer games from your computer to the PSP. Enable USB mode (as explained earlier) and connect your PSP to the computer. the files from your computer to the memory card directory to load the games onto the system.

Play the games. Access the "Game" folder and select the game you want to play from the memory card.
