Dyeing your hair blue is an exciting way to break free from the usual, boring hair colors. To achieve the perfect blue, you first need to lighten your hair as much as possible so the color will show up vibrantly. Once your hair is lightened, you can apply the blue dye and use some special techniques to ensure the color lasts as long as possible.
Steps
Lighten Your Hair Color

Use a clarifying shampoo. Clarifying shampoo helps remove dirt and buildup from your hair, making it easier to apply the dye. It also helps get rid of any leftover dye from previous coloring sessions. You can find clarifying shampoos in beauty supply stores and supermarkets.
- Follow the instructions on the clarifying shampoo's packaging. Use it just like you would your regular shampoo, ensuring proper application.

Use a color remover to eliminate dye. If your hair still has remnants of previous dye, you need to use a color remover to prepare your hair for the new dyeing session. A color remover doesn't lighten your hair; it only removes the dye, making your hair slightly lighter. However, if your hair is still dark after using the remover, you’ll need to bleach it further.

Lighten your hair if it’s still dark. If your hair remains dark after using the color remover, you'll need to bleach it to ensure it turns blue when dyed. You can use a lightening kit from beauty supply stores or supermarkets, or consult a hair care professional to help with the lightening process.

Restore your hair with deep conditioning treatment. After using the color remover and lightener, your hair may become dry and damaged. To restore its health, you should apply protein treatments or use a deep conditioner for repair.
- Follow the instructions on the packaging. For deep conditioners, apply it to freshly washed hair and leave it for a few minutes.
- It's recommended to wait a few days before dyeing your hair blue to allow it to recover from the chemical damage.
Dyeing your hair

Protect your skin and clothes. Before you begin dyeing, wear an old shirt that you don’t mind getting stained. Wrap a towel around your neck to protect your skin from the dye, and wear gloves to prevent the dye from staining your hands.
- You can apply a small amount of moisturizer around your hairline and ears to prevent the dye from touching your skin.
- Remember, the dye will wash off your skin or nails but will never come out of clothing or fabric.

Wash your hair thoroughly. You must wash your hair before dyeing it; otherwise, the dye will not take. However, avoid using conditioner, as it will prevent the dye from penetrating your hair strands.

Mix the dye. Not all dyes require mixing. If mixing is needed, follow the instructions on the packaging precisely. Use a plastic bowl and a specialized brush to blend the dye components as instructed on the label.
- For dyes that don't require mixing, it's still a good idea to pour them into a plastic bowl to make application easier.

Apply the dye to your hair. Once you're ready, divide your hair into sections. You can use hair clips to secure half of your hair on top of your head, allowing you to apply the dye to the hair underneath.
- Use your fingers or a dyeing brush to evenly coat each strand of hair. Start from the roots and work your way to the tips.
- Some dye products require you to apply until the dye starts to foam. Check the instructions on the packaging to see if foaming is necessary.

Leave the dye on for the recommended time. After applying the dye to all sections of your hair, you can cover your head with a cap or plastic wrap and set a timer. The duration depends on the type of dye you're using. Some require up to an hour, while others only need 15 minutes.
- Keep an eye on the clock to make sure you don't leave the dye on for too long.

Rinse out the dye. After the recommended time, rinse your hair until the water runs almost clear. It's best to use cool water to rinse your hair. Warm water may cause the dye to wash out, leading to less vibrant color.
- Once you've rinsed out all the dye, use a soft towel to blot your hair dry. Avoid using a blow dryer, as the heat can damage your hair and cause the color to fade.
Maintain hair color

Rinse your hair with vinegar immediately after dyeing. To help your hair color last longer and appear more vibrant, you can rinse your hair with a vinegar solution (mix vinegar with water in a 1:1 ratio). Pour one cup of white vinegar and one cup of water into a medium-sized cup. Then, apply the mixture to your hair, leave it for about 2 minutes, and rinse it out.

Wash your hair less frequently. The less often you wash your hair, the longer the color will last. Ideally, you shouldn’t wash your hair more than twice a week. To keep your hair fresh between washes, you can use dry shampoo.
- When you do wash your hair, use lukewarm or cool water.
- Additionally, rinsing your hair with cool water after using conditioner can help tighten your hair cuticles, helping to lock in the color longer.

Avoid heat styling your hair. High temperatures can cause the dye to fade quickly. To prevent this, try to avoid heat styling, such as using blow dryers, flat irons, or curling irons.
- If you need to dry your hair, use the cool or warm setting on your blow dryer instead of the hot one.
- If you want to curl your hair, consider using rollers overnight. This way, you can achieve natural curls without using a curling iron.

Touch up your color every 3-4 weeks. Most blue hair dyes are semi-permanent and tend to fade quickly, so your color will gradually lighten over time. To keep your blue shade vibrant, you’ll need to re-dye your hair every 3-4 weeks.
