Dyeing your hair pink is a fantastic way to revamp your style. You can opt for a subtle, soft pink ombre or go all out with a bold, vibrant pink all over. The dyeing process is relatively easy, but it's not just about slapping color on your hair; typically, you’ll need to bleach it first. Post-dye care is just as important – without proper maintenance, the color will fade quickly.
Steps
Bleaching Your Hair

Ensure your hair is healthy before dyeing. Damaged hair won’t hold color well. Moreover, the bleaching process itself will damage your hair to some extent, so it’s essential to start with the healthiest hair possible. If you attempt to bleach already damaged hair, you’ll only weaken it further.
- If your hair is damaged but you still want to dye it pink, consider doing an ombre style. This way, you won’t have to bleach your entire head of hair.
- It’s best to avoid washing your hair for a few days before starting the bleaching process. It might seem a bit unclean, but the natural oils on your hair will help protect it.

Decide whether to bleach your entire hair or just a portion. If you have red or blonde hair, you can bleach the whole thing. However, if your hair is dark brown or black, it’s better to consider getting an ombre dye treatment. This way, you won’t have to retouch your roots frequently, as they will grow out with your natural color, which is less damaging to your hair.
- You won’t need to bleach if your hair is already light, in the 8 to 10 range. Ask your stylist to assess the exact shade of your hair.

Protect your skin, clothing, and the workspace. Wear old clothes, or use a worn-out towel or cape for the hair dyeing process. Apply petroleum jelly (Vaseline) around your hairline, neck, and ears. Cover the floor and tables with newspaper and make sure to wear disposable gloves designed for hair dyeing.

Mix the bleach with the right developer. Stronger developers will lighten hair more quickly but can also be more damaging. Typically, for lighter hair, a 10 or 20 volume developer is enough. If you have dark hair, use a 30 volume developer.
- Each increase of 10 volume in developer can lighten hair by one level.
- Avoid using a 40 volume developer. It works too quickly and can be extremely harmful to your hair.

Test bleach on a small section of hair first. While this is not mandatory, it’s highly recommended. The time on the packaging is just a general guideline, meaning your hair may lighten faster than suggested depending on the current color and the desired lightness. Never leave the bleach on longer than the recommended time. Pick a hidden spot, like the back of your neck or behind your ears.
- If the hair isn't light enough, you’ll need to bleach it again. If your hair is healthy, you can do it the same day; however, if it’s damaged, wait at least two weeks before re-bleaching.

Bleach your hair when it's dry, starting from the tips. Divide your hair into four sections. Apply bleach to each section, starting with 1.5-2.5 cm wide strands from the tips to the mid-lengths. After bleaching the entire hair, go back and apply bleach to the roots.
- Since the heat from your scalp accelerates the bleaching process at the roots, apply bleach to the roots last.
- Be thorough when applying bleach. The back of your head is often neglected, so be extra careful when bleaching this area.
- If you're planning to dye your hair pink, you need to bleach it to a level 10 or platinum blonde.
- Be cautious when bleaching previously dyed hair. It might not bleach evenly, and the hair dye can react with the bleach.

Wait for the bleach to take effect, then rinse thoroughly with shampoo. Remember, everyone's hair reacts differently to bleach. Your hair may reach the desired level of lightness before the recommended time on the package. Once your hair has reached the desired shade, rinse out the bleach using shampoo. If, after the time has passed, your hair still hasn't reached the color you want, you should rinse the bleach out and plan for another treatment.
- Check for signs of damage, such as hair loss or breakage. If you notice these signs, wait a few weeks before trying again.

Bleach your hair a second time if necessary. Sometimes, one bleaching session isn't enough to achieve the desired level. If you have brown hair and want to dye it pastel pink, you may need to bleach again. However, keep in mind that very dark hair might not bleach to a light blonde; you may need to settle for a darker pink tone.
- If your hair is healthy, you can bleach it a second time on the same day. If your hair is damaged, wait 1-2 weeks before attempting to bleach again.

Visit a salon for bleaching if you have dark hair. Bleaching is the most damaging step in the hair coloring process. There are many risks involved, from uneven spots to burnt hair. You can bleach light blonde and light brown hair at home with a bleach kit, but dark brown and black hair require more precision and care. If you have dark hair, it's best to visit a professional salon.
- Listen to the stylist. If they say your hair can't be lightened further, don't try to bleach it again.
Adjust your hair color with toner.

Determine if your hair needs a toner adjustment. Typically, hair turns yellow or orange after bleaching. If you're planning to dye it a warm pink tone like salmon, you don't need to adjust the hair color – just note that the pink will have a warmer hue than what's shown on the dye box. However, if you're aiming for a cool-toned pink or a pale pastel shade, you'll need to adjust your hair color to achieve the lightest, most platinum look possible.
- A cool pink tone has hints of blue or purple.
- The level of whiteness or silver achieved after using toner will depend on the lightness of your hair after bleaching. Orange-toned hair will become more silver, while yellow-toned hair will turn more white.

Rinse your hair with cool water and apply conditioner. Thoroughly rinse out the dye from your hair with cool water. Once the water runs clear, apply conditioner to your hair. Wait 2-3 minutes and then rinse out the conditioner with cool water to close the hair cuticle. Do not use any shampoo for at least the next 3 days.
- Use vinegar to lock in the color and add shine to your hair. Let the vinegar sit for 2-3 minutes before rinsing it out. If any vinegar scent lingers in your hair, you can use dry conditioner or another product to mask the smell.

Use a glossing shampoo if you want shiny hair. Choose a product with a pink tone and apply it to your hair immediately after rinsing out the dye. Wait 10 minutes or follow the recommended time on the package, then rinse thoroughly.
Hair Color Maintenance

Use color-preserving products that are sulfate-free. Avoid products that contain sulfate. Sulfate effectively cleanses hair, but it can strip the color. For longer-lasting hair color, opt for sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners or products labeled as color-safe. Most color-preserving or sulfate-free products will state this on the packaging. If you're unsure, check the ingredients list on the back. Do not buy any products containing "sulfate".
- Mix a little dye into your conditioner bottle. This will add a touch of color to your hair every time you wash it, helping the color last longer.

Deep condition your hair once a week with a hair mask. Purchase a hair mask specifically for dyed or chemically treated hair. Apply the product to damp hair, then cover your hair with a shower cap. Leave it on for the amount of time indicated on the package, then rinse it out.
- Most hair masks need to be left on for about 5-10 minutes, but some products may require 15-20 minutes. Always check the label for timing, but don't worry too much if you leave it on longer than recommended.

Wash your hair only 1-2 times a week. The more frequently you wash your hair, the quicker the color will fade – even if you're using sulfate-free color-preserving shampoo and conditioner. If your hair tends to get oily or greasy, you can use dry shampoo in between washes.

Use cool water when washing your hair. Just like with heat styling, hot water can cause hair dye to fade faster. It can also make your hair look damaged. After shampooing and conditioning, rinse your hair with cold water for about a minute to boost shine and smoothness.
- If you can't tolerate cold water, use lukewarm water instead.

Minimize heat styling. Unless it's freezing outside and you're rushing to work or school, you should let your hair air dry. If you want to curl your hair, opt for a heatless method, like using hair rollers. Avoid straightening your hair whenever possible.
- If you must use a straightener or curling iron, make sure your hair is completely dry. Apply a heat protectant and set your styling tools to a low heat.
- Sunlight also causes hair color to fade. You should wear a hat, scarf, or a hooded jacket when going outdoors.

Touch up your color every 3-4 weeks or as needed. Just like red hues, pink tones tend to fade quickly. Touching up your color may also mean you'll need to bleach your roots as they grow out. If you prefer not to bleach your roots, you can leave them natural and only re-dye the ends for an ombre effect.
- The more vibrant the pink, the more noticeable it will be as it fades. However, pastel pink often fades slower.
- Some people actually prefer the faded look of bright pink as it turns into a pastel hue. If that's the case, you won't need to touch up your color as often.
Choose the right hair color tone

Decide whether you want a light or dark hair color. Pink comes in various shades, ranging from pale to deep. Each shade has its advantages and will create a different look for you. For example:
- Try lighter shades if you're looking for easy maintenance. These include baby pink, cotton candy, pale, and pastel shades.
- Opt for bright neon shades if you want your color to last longer. These include atomic pink, carnation, cupcake, flamingo, magenta, and shocking pink.
- Choose darker tones if you have naturally dark hair and cannot bleach it to the right level. Examples include bordeaux, eggplant, violet gem, and virgin rose.

Pick a tone that complements your undertone. Generally, it's best to choose a hair color that matches your skin's undertone. For example, if you have a warm (yellow) undertone, select a warm pink tone with hints of gold or orange. If your skin has a cool (pink) undertone, opt for cool pink tones with shades of purple or blue.
- If you're unsure which color suits you, you can visit a wig shop and try on wigs in different shades.

Accept darker shades if you have naturally dark hair. Typically, you'll need to bleach your hair, but remember you can only bleach it to a certain level. In these cases, your hair might turn a darker pink after coloring. For example, if you have dark brown or black hair, it might not lighten enough for pastel pink. You may end up with a darker pink color instead.
- Dark hair is harder to bleach than light hair, even with bleach.

Choose a color that fits your school's or workplace's guidelines. If you work in a professional environment with strict dress codes, bright pink might not be the best choice and could lead to a warning – the same goes for schools. However, bold pink hair might look great in creative workplaces like art studios or art schools.
- If your school or workplace has strict dress codes, consider opting for a more natural pink shade, like rose gold.
- Check with your school or employer to see if the color you're thinking of dyeing your hair is acceptable.
Tips
- If hair dye stains your skin, you can use a cotton ball soaked in alcohol-based makeup remover to wipe it off.
- To check if your natural hair color will take to the dye as you want, try dyeing a small section or just the tips. This way, if you don’t like the test result, you can cut off the dyed ends.
- Prepare more dye than you think you’ll need, especially if you have long or thick hair.
- If you’re unsure about how pink hair will look on you, try wearing a wig or use an image editing program like Photoshop to change your hair color.
- To cover up your natural hair color at the roots, you can apply blush or eyeshadow that matches your dyed hair color. While it’s not a perfect solution, it can help conceal the natural roots.
Warning
- Never apply bleach to wet hair or directly to the roots first. Always apply bleach to dry hair, starting from the tips.
- Pink hair dye can stain and leave marks for a few days after application. Consider using dark pillowcases when you sleep.
- Do not leave bleach on your hair longer than the recommended time stated on the product packaging.
