Is there a can of mushrooms gathering dust in your pantry? Don’t worry – we’re here to help. Check out the list below with a variety of snacks, sides, and main dishes you can make using canned mushrooms.
Steps
Eat the mushrooms right after opening the can.

Canned food is completely safe to eat right out of the can without any preparation. Before ingredients (like mushrooms) are canned, the food is heated to a high enough temperature to kill any bacteria or microorganisms. You won’t get sick eating canned mushrooms straight from the can.
Sautéed mushrooms for a delicious side dish.

Add a can of mushrooms, drained of liquid, to the mixture and stir in the pan until hot. Then, serve the mushrooms on potatoes, steak, or any savory dish of your choice!

Swiss cheese and mushrooms make a great combination for a burger. Grill the patties over medium heat for about 12 minutes, 6 minutes per side. Next, sauté 2 cans of sliced, drained mushrooms with 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of soy sauce and 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of butter over medium heat until the mushrooms turn brown. Before removing the patties from the grill, scoop a spoonful of the sautéed mushrooms onto the patty along with a slice of Swiss cheese. Once the cheese melts, assemble the burger.

Tip
- If you have leftover mushrooms, store them in an airtight container and freeze them for later use! The mushrooms will retain their quality for 1-2 months.
- Canned mushrooms are typically available sliced or whole. Choose whole mushrooms for recipes requiring larger pieces, and sliced mushrooms if you want to reduce preparation time.
Warning
- Do not use mushrooms if the can is dented or rusted. The food may be contaminated if the packaging is damaged.
