Dragon fruit is a striking fruit with a bright red skin and a sweet, kiwi-like interior. This cactus fruit is packed with fiber, vitamin C, and vitamin B. Prepare the Dragon Fruit

Find Dragon Fruit. If you are in the U.S., it might be difficult to find dragon fruit, depending on where you live. It is more commonly sold in Asia, but it is rare in the U.S. and Europe. If your local grocery store doesn't carry it, you might want to check specialty Asian markets nearby.

Choose a ripe fruit. The dragon fruit should have bright red or pink skin. Similar to kiwi or peaches, dragon fruit only tastes good when it's ripe.
- Press gently on the dragon fruit. If the flesh slightly sinks in, it’s ripe. If it feels soft, it's overripe and not as tasty. If it's firm, let it sit for a few more days before eating.
- Avoid fruits with dark streaks, bruising, dry brown spots on the skin, or shriveled leaves.
Cut the dragon fruit in half. Use a sharp knife to slice the fruit in half. You'll see the white flesh inside, which resembles kiwi, with small black seeds scattered throughout.
Scoop out the flesh with a spoon. Run the spoon along the edge of the skin, inserting it beneath the flesh to separate it. If the dragon fruit is ripe, the skin should come off easily.
Eat the dragon fruit. You can scoop the flesh with a spoon, cut the fruit into quarters like you would an apple, or prepare it using one of the following recipes. You might want to cut the fruit into five pieces for a more elegant presentation.
- Dragon fruit tastes best when chilled, so store it in the refrigerator.
- Remember, do not eat the skin of the dragon fruit. It's inedible and may cause stomach discomfort.
Make Dragon Fruit Kebab

Make Dragon Fruit Smoothie
Prepare the fruits. Dragon fruit pairs well with bananas, berries, and any other fruits you'd like to use for your smoothie.
- Cut the dragon fruit in half. Use a spoon to scoop out the flesh and chop it into small pieces.
- Peel a banana and cut it into small pieces.
- Rinse about 400g of blueberries.
Select the liquid base. The flesh of dragon fruit pairs wonderfully with a creamy liquid base. You can choose from the following options:
- Plain yogurt or Greek yogurt, either plain or flavored.
- Milk – whole, low-fat, or skim, depending on your preference.
- Plain soy milk or flavored varieties.
- Nut milks such as almond or cashew milk.
Add some extra ingredients. If you like your smoothie to have a sweeter and more complex flavor, consider adding some of these ingredients:
- Apple or grape juice
- A few tablespoons of sugar, syrup, or honey.
- Peanut butter or almond butter.
Place the ingredients in the blender. Add all the dragon fruit, banana, and blueberries into the blender. Pour in the liquid base you chose and add a few spoonfuls of sweetener or nut butter of your choice.
Blend all the ingredients. Turn on the blender to blend the ingredients until smooth.
- If the smoothie is too thick, add a bit of milk, juice, or water to thin it out.
- If you'd like a thicker smoothie, add some instant oats.
Pour the smoothie into a glass and enjoy. Use a straw to drink the smoothie or, if it's a thicker smoothie, use a spoon to eat it.
Make Dragon Fruit Sorbet
Prepare 2 dragon fruits. Cut the dragon fruit in half and scoop out the flesh from both sides of the skin. Then, chop the dragon fruit into small cubes.
- The skin of the dragon fruit can be used as a serving dish for the sorbet. Place the skins in the freezer if you'd like to use them for serving the sorbet.
Blend the dragon fruit with other ingredients for the sorbet. Place the dragon fruit into the blender along with ¾ cup of water, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Blend all the ingredients until smooth.
Pour the mixture into an ice cream mold. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to freeze the sorbet.
- If you don’t have an ice cream mold, you can still make the sorbet by following these steps:
- Pour the sorbet mixture into a baking tray. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and place it in the freezer.
- After 2 hours, part of the mixture will freeze. Stir the mixture well, then cover and return it to the freezer.
- Continue stirring the sorbet every 2 hours for a total of 8 hours.
- After 8 hours, allow the mixture to freeze overnight.
Scoop the sorbet into the dragon fruit peel. Enjoy it with soft angel food cake, dense pound cake, or a flaky mille-feuille pastry.
Tips
- Be sure to wash the skin of the dragon fruit thoroughly. Cutting the fruit with its skin on can transfer bacteria to the flesh, which is not good for health.
