Today, Mytour will guide you through the process of opening and editing DLL files on a Windows computer using free programs or web services. Please note that customizing DLL files can have serious consequences for your computer.
Steps
Preparing to Edit DLL Files
You need to know where to locate the DLL file. DLL files are binary files used by Windows to execute basic tasks and are often deeply embedded within the system directories of your computer. Due to this, tampering with DLL files is not advisable. If you wish to edit a DLL file, you may need to unhide hidden files and folders on your computer.
- You can also press ⊞ Win+E to open File Explorer.
Click on View (View mode). This tab is located at the top of the File Explorer window. A toolbar will appear at the top of the window.
Check the box labeled "Hidden items." This box is found in the "Show/hide" section of the toolbar. Checking this box ensures that your computer will display hidden files and folders.
- You can now exit File Explorer.
Consider creating a backup of the DLL file. DLL files are often critical to the performance of your computer or specific programs, so making a copy before editing is essential.
- Locate the DLL file you wish to edit and click on it.
- Press Ctrl+C to copy the DLL file.
- Navigate to your desktop or an easily accessible folder.
- Press Ctrl+V to paste the copied DLL file here.
Edit the DLL File with Hex Editor
Download the Hex Editor setup file. Visit https://www.hhdsoftware.com/free-hex-editor using your computer's web browser, then click on Download near the top of the page.
Install Hex Editor. Double-click the setup file "free-hex-editor-neo" you just downloaded, then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Once installed, Hex Editor will launch automatically.
- If Hex Editor does not open after installation, double-click the blue "Hex Editor Neo" shortcut on your desktop to start the program before proceeding.
Click on File (File). This option is located in the top-left corner of the Hex Editor window. A dropdown menu will appear.
Select Open in the File dropdown menu. Another menu will pop up.
Click on Open File… (Open File…). This option is located in the Open menu that just appeared. The File Explorer window will open.
Locate the DLL file you wish to edit. In the File Explorer window, navigate to the folder containing the DLL file you want to modify.
Click to select the DLL file.
Click on Open in the bottom-right corner of the window. The DLL file will open in Hex Editor.
Edit the contents of the DLL file. To modify a binary value, right-click on it, select Edit, and then change the data as needed.
- You can also delete a value by clicking on it and pressing Del.
Save all changes. Click on File and choose Save All from the dropdown menu. Any changes made to the DLL file will be saved.
- You can also press Ctrl+⇧ Shift+S to save all changes.
Tips
- Due to the sensitive nature of DLL files, they cannot be opened or edited through standard processes on Windows (e.g., using Notepad).
- Technically, DLL files can be opened in Notepad++, but most of the content will be unreadable.
Warnings
- DLL files are highly sensitive system components. Avoid editing DLL files unless you possess the necessary expertise.
