No matter how well you care for your skin, large pores can still appear. They make any imperfections on your face look more noticeable. If you're bothered by enlarged pores and unsightly imperfections, here are some methods to minimize them.
Steps
Methods to Shrink Pores

Wash your face daily, but be careful not to overdo it. Pores expand when clogged with dirt, oil, or bacteria, causing them to become inflamed. Regular washing, but not excessively — once in the morning and once in the evening — will help keep pores looking smaller and feel more refreshed.

Apply ice to your face. Gently place the ice along your pores for 15 to 30 seconds. Cold water helps tighten your skin.

Create a paste using baking soda. Makeup artists highly recommend baking soda because it can help reduce the appearance of pores while fighting acne. However, if you have sensitive skin, use caution as it may cause irritation.
- Mix equal parts of baking soda and warm water (2 teaspoons each) to create a paste.
- Apply the mixture to your skin and massage gently for about 30 seconds.
- Rinse off with cold water.
- Use this method as part of your nightly skincare routine for 5-7 days. After a week, reduce the frequency to 3-5 times a week.

Soak a washcloth in lemon and pineapple juice. Apply the cloth to your face for a minute. Then, wash your face with warm water. Lemon and pineapple juices contain natural enzymes that tighten and firm your skin while also cleansing and brightening your complexion. If you have sensitive skin, apply a moisturizer before using the cloth to ensure the lemon juice doesn’t irritate your skin. Lemon juice is particularly effective for cleansing and shrinking pores.

Use a gentle facial cleanser. These products often contain exfoliating beads and other soothing ingredients that help reduce clogged pores. Some gentle facial cleansers can even be used nightly instead of washing your face.
- If you choose to use this product instead of washing, only apply the cleanser without rinsing afterward; do not wash your face again. Over-washing can irritate the skin and cause redness, which would counteract your efforts to minimize pores.

Apply a yogurt mask. Yogurt contains lactic acid and probiotics, which help control acne-causing bacteria, thereby reducing pore size.
- Apply a thin layer of plain yogurt to your face and leave it on for 5-10 minutes. Leaving it on for longer than 10 minutes may irritate your skin.
- Use this mask about once a week. As with most other masks, it’s important not to overdo it—limit use to once per week.

Maintain a Healthy Diet. Follow a diet rich in lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids. Drink plenty of water instead of sugary or caffeinated beverages. Avoid excessive consumption of milk and dairy products, as they contain hormones that can worsen acne.
- Ensure sufficient intake of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and B vitamins. Vitamin C helps reduce wrinkles and heal scars, while Vitamin A works similarly.
- Oranges help firm the skin and rebuild collagen, which contributes to improving skin elasticity and reducing pore size. Tangerines also provide similar benefits.

Use Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids, or AHA and BHA. AHA and BHA are chemical exfoliants, not natural ones. They weaken the bonding properties of lipids that keep dead skin cells intact on the skin’s surface even after exfoliation. BHA is effective in penetrating pores because it is lipid-soluble, meaning it can cut through the oil or sebum in your pores.
- Use exfoliating chemicals like AHA and BHA every 4 to 6 weeks. Using them more frequently does not necessarily mean they are better for your skin.
Flaw Reduction Methods

Harness the Power of Lemon to Fade Imperfections. The citric acid in lemon targets pigments that cause redness or discoloration, resulting in lighter spots. Lemon juice helps fade imperfections while brightening the skin, but it makes your skin more sensitive to the sun, so always apply sunscreen or wear a mask when going outdoors.
- Mix tomato juice with lemon juice and apply it evenly on your face. Rinse off with cold water after 10 minutes. This mixture gradually fades imperfections and brightens the skin.
- Combine 2 tablespoons of honey and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice with a pinch of turmeric powder. Rinse off with cold water after 10 minutes. When used regularly, this mixture is highly effective.
- Rub lemon peel with a bit of sugar on your skin. Leave it for about 10 minutes before rinsing off with cold water.

Use Sandalwood Powder and Water to Fade Imperfections. Create a paste using sandalwood powder and water, then apply it to your face. Leave it on for 10-20 minutes before washing off with cold water. Be cautious, as sandalwood can cause your skin to dry out.

Rub Papaya or Banana Peels on Your Skin. Leave them on for 15 minutes before rinsing with cold water. Your imperfections will appear smaller and/or lighter.
- In addition to other acids, both papaya and banana contain the enzymes papain and bromelain, which help lighten imperfections.

Use Rosehip Oil. Rosehip oil is incredibly effective in treating red pimples. You can apply it in small amounts on your face for 15 minutes each day before rinsing off with cold water.
Treatments for Pores and Imperfections with Medication and Dermatology

Follow the Doctor's Instructions for Medication. Your doctor or dermatologist will inform you of the medications to use, both topical and oral, which can completely treat acne within a few weeks.

Try Dermabrasion Therapy (A Skin Resurfacing Technique). Dermabrasion essentially involves removing the top layer of skin or epidermis using a fine diamond-tipped drill or a metal brush, thereby "smoothing" skin imperfections. It is effective for treating acne or acne scars.
- Microdermabrasion Therapy. Similar to dermabrasion, this is a gentler technique. A soft abrasive device is moved over the epidermis, softening imperfections and encouraging collagen production.

Dermaplaning Therapy. Similar to dermabrasion, but instead of using a tool to remove the outer skin, dermatologists use a technique of 'scraping' it off with a series of back-and-forth motions.

Eliminate Imperfections. A cosmetic expert uses a high-frequency machine with electrical currents to destroy bacteria causing inflammation in acne-prone areas. A small electrode is run over the affected area, and the imperfection will visibly reduce within hours.
- You can also purchase the Zeno device, a high-frequency machine similar to the one mentioned above. The only difference is that it is a handheld device powered by batteries.

Cortisone Injections. A dermatologist can inject cortisone into acne-affected areas, which will reduce swelling within a day. However, this is typically considered a last resort when other treatments have not worked.
Tips
- Avoid getting lemon juice in your eyes, as citric acid can cause a burn.
- Do not use expired or damaged products.
- Prepare everything before starting the treatment.
- Some skincare products, such as the Neutrogena brand, are highly effective.
- Wash and dry your hands before starting.
- Always remember not to pop pimples. Any pressure on the skin, even minimal, can stimulate the acne-prone area. The best way to prevent scarring is to touch your face as little as possible. Your hands contain a lot of oil that can clog pores and cause more acne.
- Avoid scrubbing too hard – it can irritate the skin, especially if it's sensitive.
- Drink plenty of water and maintain a healthy diet.
- Don’t wait until the last minute to treat your skin.
- Be patient with natural treatments. Medication and surgery should be the last resort.
- Ensure that the products you're using are compatible with each other.
Warnings
- Don’t attempt all methods at once. Try one method, and if it doesn’t work, move on to another. Overdoing it can worsen your skin condition.
- If any method causes discomfort or pain, stop using it. Pain is your body’s way of telling you to stop.
- Avoid using pore-cleansing milk-based products. They can irritate your pores more and promote bacterial growth, leading to more acne.
- Don’t overdo steaming your face! It can result in dry skin and even burns.
