Moths are a common problem faced by most households. They tend to appear in kitchens (where they feed on grains and various seeds) and in wardrobes (where they are attracted to wool, silk, and other fabrics). To permanently eliminate moths, there are two key stages: first, address the immediate issue of moths with traps, vinegar solutions, and thorough cleaning; secondly, implement preventive measures such as camphor and proper storage techniques to ensure moths don't return.
At-home solutions
Moths are destructive creatures, but you can get rid of them by using common items around the house:
- Use flypaper and fish oil to create moth traps at home.
- Apply a vinegar solution to clean your wardrobe and kitchen.
- Place cedarwood in your wardrobe to ward off moths.
- Use bundles of rosemary, thyme, cloves, lavender, or bay leaves to repel moths.
Steps to follow
Eliminating moths from your wardrobe

- Small holes in woolen clothes or other fabrics. If you find one hole in a sweater, you may find more in other garments. Check all clothes made of wool, leather, fur, and silk.
- Clothes appearing dusty, discolored, or smelling musty.
- A web-like layer in the corners of your wardrobe or on clothes.

- You can create your own moth traps using flypaper and fish oil (to attract moths). Simply apply a little fish oil on the flypaper and hang it in your wardrobe.
- Mouse traps can also be effective in catching moths. Specifically, look for traps with infrared sensors, as these can detect moths approaching and eliminate them when they get near the bait.

Experts agree: If you only notice a small number of moths, you can use sticky traps to catch them. Place the traps under your kitchen cabinets and wait for the moths to be eliminated, then begin cleaning. After cleaning, replace the traps in their original positions to prevent them from returning.

- Follow the garment care instructions. If possible, put clothes in a hot dryer. For items that cannot be tumble-dried at high temperatures, place them in the freezer for a few days to kill any moth eggs (if present).
- Wash bed linens, towels, and any fabric items stored in your wardrobe.
- Take suitcases, handbags, and other containers and wash them thoroughly.

- Use soapy water or a vinegar-water solution to scrub the wardrobe floors and walls. Dip a sponge into the solution and scrub the walls to dislodge any moth eggs. Make sure to clean thoroughly in corners and cracks.
- Vacuum thoroughly. Use your vacuum cleaner on high power to clean the carpet inside the wardrobe. You should also vacuum the entire bedroom area, as moths can lay eggs there too.

Eliminating moths in the kitchen

- Food sticking together or appearing slightly sticky. This could be due to moth secretions.
- Food smelling musty or "spoiled", even though it hasn't passed its expiration date or been exposed to conditions that would typically spoil food.
- A thin web-like layer around boxes or bags in the kitchen.
- The appearance of caterpillars or fully-grown moths in the kitchen is a clear indication that action is needed.

- Large quantities of food, such as cereals, grains, and rice, as moths feed and lay eggs in these items.
- Moths can chew through cardboard. If you see small holes in boxes in the kitchen, it’s time to dispose of them.
- Moths can also infest small spaces. Throw away anything that has been opened, even plastic bags containing chocolate or nuts.
- Dispose of contaminated food in a sealed trash bag and take it out of the house immediately.

- Use a soapy water solution or a mix of vinegar and water as a cleaning agent. Alternatively, stronger chemical cleaning products can also be used.
- Dip a cleaning sponge or scrubbing pad into the solution and scrub the kitchen cabinets, counters, and any cracks or corners. Make sure to clean all surfaces thoroughly to remove any moth eggs.

Prevent moths from invading and damaging your kitchen

- Choose glass or plastic containers for storing large quantities of food. Make sure the container has a tight-fitting lid.
- Instead of leaving leftover food in its packaging on the kitchen countertop, transfer it into a container with a secure lid. Moths can penetrate cardboard boxes and thin plastic bags.

- Close windows and doors when using the air conditioner.
- Ensure the kitchen and food storage areas are well-ventilated.

Warning
- Camphor is toxic to humans. Keep small children and pets away from cabinets if using camphor.
